WHAT IS Create IT Discovery Day? An effort to grow the IT Talent Pipeline Huge shortage of IT workers Goal of opening minds Hands-on hardware/software activities Campus Tour Panel discussion with current college IT students

Mission Statement Provide an engaging, rewarding event for high school students to introduce them to the information technology career path. Ultimately, we want to encourage high school students to enroll in the Integrated Information Technology major at the University of South Carolina.

Project Description Design, implement, and execute an entertaining IT “Discovery Day” event for high school students. Create schedule for the day of the event. Decide on the breakout sessions of the event. Learn new technologies such as 3D Printing, Raspberry Pi, and GameMaker. Learn and design a campus tour. Manage and maintain Eventbrite. Recruit volunteers, coordinators, and student panel. Administer the event itself.

Breakout Sessions 4 sessions lasting 45 minutes High school attendees rotate through 1. 3D Printing 2. Raspberry Pi 3. GameMaker 4. Campus Tour USC Student Panel Discussion

3D Printing Overview lecture on 3D Printing history, capabilities, and future. High school attendees 3D printed Ford Mustang muscle car.

Raspberry Pi Overview lecture on Raspberry Pi computer Students hooked them up Played with “Scratch”, a drag and drop programming language

GameMaker Tutorial of how to make a video game using GameMaker software. Students made their own game, “Capture the Clown” or “Fruit Harvest”. Involves adding items, sounds, and movement without coding. GameMaker is free!

Campus Tour Students went on a tour of the beautiful University of South Carolina campus. Tour included a visit to the Horseshoe and Thomas Cooper Library.

USC Student Panel Discussion 3 majors represented: Integrated Information Technology Computer Science Library Information Science Sample Questions: How did you decide on your major? What student clubs are available to your major? What are some examples of classes that you have taken? Who are some prospective employers, who have hired graduates with your major?

Time & Budget Project Budget: $1743.12 Time: 216.5 hours

Challenges Faced Learning new technologies such as 3D Printing, Raspberry Pi, and GameMaker in less than a month. Recruiting over 15 volunteers for campus tours, student panel, registration, teaching assistants, color leaders, and event coordinators. Day of the event challenges such as AV glitches, laptop issues, and computer lab misinterpretation.
