Plants!!! What Domain? What kingdom? Eukaryotic or Prokaryotic? Autotroph or Heterotroph? Multicellular or Unicellular?

What do you notice about each of these plants What do you notice about each of these plants. What kind of environment do you think they may live in? Non-vascular vs. vascular. Non-vascular: less complex, low to the ground, very green. Live near water? (usually water, shady, or damp areas) Vascular: more complex, very tall, bigger, less green. Not limited to areas near water/shade…most environments.

What is a vascular plant? Add to your notes! They have vascular tissue = a transport system Main organs: They all have roots, stems, and leaves!  Think back to that big tree. Plants are living. Just like you, they need water and food to survive. A plant that tall needs a way for water and food to reach all parts of it! = a need for a transport system!

Root System: fibrous vs. taproot Add to your notes! Root System: fibrous vs. taproot Function: to absorb water/nutrients, anchoring/support Fibrous – many tiny roots - Help prevent soil erosion Taproot- one main root Ex. carrots

Stems: Function: transport Transport system= vascular bundle Xylem – transports water from roots to the leaves (up) Phloem – transports food in both directions (up and down)

Leaves: Simple vs. Compound Function: site of photosynthesis Simple leaves only have 1 blade Compound leaves has many small leaves

What you don’t see… Mesophyll (middle layer); have a lot of chloroplasts

Stomata and Guard Cells Stomata: small openings in the leaf that allow gas exchange and water to pass through Guard cells- two cells that form stomata
