FAFSA Free Application for Federal Student Aid www.fafsa.gov 1-800-433-3243 Determines your EFC Colleges use the EFC to calculate your financial aid eligibility

Common FAFSA Errors Social Security Numbers Parent income reported in student section Parent’s marital status Tax Paid Income earned from work Untaxed income

After filing your FAFSA The schools you listed will receive your information. At the same time you will receive a Student Aid Report. Your schools will follow up with you if they need any information. Contact your school if you have any unusual financial circumstances.

Making Corrections If necessary, corrections to FAFSA data may be made by: Using FAFSA on the Web (www.fafsa.gov) if student has a PIN Updating paper SAR Submitting documentation to college’s financial aid office

Verification Your FAFSA application is selected by the Central Processing System (CPS). You must provide specific information to the financial aid office before your financial aid can be finalized. The financial aid office will send you a form listing the information they need. May include: IRS Tax Transcript (1-800-908-9946) or use Data Retrieval Tool Household size and number in college Untaxed income: Child Support Paid Food Stamps Income from work

Special Circumstances Change in employment status Medical expenses not covered by insurance Change in parent marital status Unusual dependent care expenses Student cannot obtain parent information*

Common Federal Aid Programs Federal Pell Grant TEACH Grant FSEOG Federal Perkins Loan Federal Work-Study Federal Direct (Stafford) Loans Federal Direct PLUS Loans PELL - Awarded to eligible undergraduates pursuing first baccalaureate degree and certain students enrolled in post-baccalaureate teacher certification or licensing programs Actual award amount based on COA, EFC, and enrollment status Maximum award for 2010-11 = $5,550 Perkins max $5500 annually
