This article is a part of the results from a research entitled “The Recognition of Religious Counseling: A Comparative Study on the Islamic and Christian Counseling Practices in Malaysia”. It is a comparative religion study and counseling is the subject of comparison

Christian counseling originated from the Christian Bible Christian counseling developed along with the growth of Christianity itself - considered as a part of the pastoral function of the church When secular counselling emerged in the late 1800’s, Christian counseling has been divided into informal pastoral counseling that has been practiced in the context of pastoral care and a formalized professional Christian counseling advocated by lay Christian mental health professionals (Tan, 1991).

Currently, studies on Christian counseling in Asia demonstrate that the professional Christian counseling has diverted into a few models namely, biblical, the levels-of-explanation, integration, Christian psychology and the transformational approaches (Yeo, 2002). Whereas in Malaysia, there is no comprehensive recent report on its contemporary development. Thus, this research was initiated with the aims to investigate the nature of current Christian Counseling practices in Malaysia.
