PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat,

for in the day that you eat of it you shall die for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.’ Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God say, “You shall not eat from any tree in the garden”?’

The woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, “You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die”.’

But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,

and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened,

and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God,

command these stones to become loaves of bread command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”.’

Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, “He will command his angels concerning you,” and “On their hands they

will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone” will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone”.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test”.’

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, ‘All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.’

Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan Jesus said to him, ‘Away with you, Satan! for it is written, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him”.’ Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!

“Trust and Obey” Rev. Tedd Pullano

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.1 When we walk with the Lord in the light of his Word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.1 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.2 Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, but his smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt or a fear, not a sign nor a tear, can abide while we trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.2 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.3 Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil he doth richly repay; Not a grief nor a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.3 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.4 But we never can prove the delights of his love until all on the altar we lay; For the favor he shows, and the joy he bestows, are for those who will trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.4 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.5 Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet, or we’ll walk by his side in the way; What he says we will do, where he sends we will go, never fear, only trust and obey.

*HYMN “Trust and Obey” v.5 Trust and obey, for there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD JOYS AND CONCERNS PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER All who trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are invited to participate in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Table. With parental permission, baptized children are welcome to partake in the Sacrament as well.

*INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE L: Brothers and sisters in Christ, as we continue our Lenten journey, I invite you to come to the joyful feast of the Lord and be transformed. At this table, we meet God in a real and powerful way.

*HYMN #516 “Lord, We Have Come” v.1 Lord, we have come at Your own invitation, Chosen by You, to be counted Your friends;

*HYMN #516 “Lord, We Have Come” v.1 Yours is the strength that sustains dedication, Ours a commitment we know never ends.

*THE GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING L: Return your hearts to the Lord! P: We do return them up to the Lord! L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. P: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

L: We thank you, God, for calling Abram to be your servant and to bring your blessings to all the world. We thank you for then making a covenant, a deal, with Israel, promising to be Israel’s light and salvation. You made Israel your people, and promised that through them all peoples of the world

would be blessed. We thank you that we are now your people, and that the covenant is now with us. But we acknowledge that they, like us today, sinned against you and spurned your love. So we are grateful that you did not give up on us, but you sent prophets, apostles, and martyrs, who shared your

life-giving Word; you sent leaders who ruled with justice, who lifted up the poor and needy, and defended the people from their enemies. You gave all your love to redeem and restore us. So, with all those through the ages who have loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and with all who try so hard to serve

him here and now, we join our voices in offering praise to you: P: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

L: In sending Jesus the Christ, the obedient one, you revealed to all how your love works, and once and for all conquered sin. Jesus obeyed you by preaching, teaching, restoring, and redeeming. He brought healing everywhere he went. He put total trust in you – in the desert and even unto death – a death which

secured our salvation. For that we are deeply thankful secured our salvation. For that we are deeply thankful. So, here in this holy time of celebration, here at the sacred feast prepared for us, we would speak of that mystery we call faith: P: We remember Christ’s death; we remember Christ’s resurrection;

We remember Christ will come again in glory. L: God of love, let your Holy Spirit move in power and love over us and over these earthly gifts of bread and wine. By our sharing of them may we experience the mystery of the true communion of the body and blood of Christ, and may we

be strengthened to follow him and carry his healing to all who are in need.

The Lord’s Prayer (unison) Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come; thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION On the night he was arrested, while they were eating together and having fellowship, Jesus reached over, took some bread, gave thanks to God. Then he broke it, and gave it to his disciples and told them, “ Take this and eat it. This is my body, given for you.

Do this remembering me and my example.” In the same way, as the meal ended, he took the cup from the table, and said, “This cup I have here is the new covenant, new hope, which will be sealed in my blood; blood I will shed for you for the forgiveness of your sins. Whenever you drink it,

Remember me.” Jesus tells us boldly: “I am the bread of life. If any of you come to me, you won’t be hungry; if any of you believe in me, you Will never be thirsty.” Friends, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup,

You proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord until he comes – and you experience the grace of God.

Distribution of the Bread SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP Distribution of the Bread (bread is gluten free) (to symbolize our common experience of God’s grace, please retain the bread until all have been served).

Distribution of the Cup SHARING OF THE BREAD AND CUP Distribution of the Cup (to symbolize our individual experience of God’s grace, please drink the cup as it is served).

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION All: Gracious God, we give you thanks for your mercy and forgiveness. We are grateful that you satisfy our longing hearts with this holy meal shared in the Spirit with your Son, our Lord, Jesus.

Strengthened and refreshed, we go from here to sin no more and to be his disciples in the world through sincere worship, faithful witness and service to others shaped by unconditional love.

This we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
