Presentation transcript:

1.1 What is Science? Science is a system of knowledge and the methods you use to find that knowledge. It begins with curiosity and often ends in discovery. Observing and measuring provide ways to find answers. Observations can be quantitative (numerical) or qualitative ( descriptive).

Technology Technology is the use of knowledge to solve practical problems Its goal is to apply scientific knowledge. Advances in technology lead to advances in science, and visa versa. They depend on one another.

Branches of Science Science is divided into social science and natural science. Natural science is generally divided into 3 branches: Physical science Earth and space science Life science

Physical Science Chemistry and physics are physical sciences. Chemistry is the study of the makeup, structure, properties, and reactions of matter. Physics is the study of matter and energy and the interactions between the two through forces and motion.

Earth Science The foundation of Earth science is geology, the study of the origin, history, and structure of the earth. The foundation of space science is astronomy, the study of the universe beyond earth, including the sun, moon, planets, and stars. Can you name what is studied in meteorology?

Life science The study of living things is known as biology, or life science. Like other branches of science, there are many divisions within biology: Can you name what is studied in Zoology? Botany? Ecology? Genetics?

BIG IDEAS of physical science: Space and time Matter and change Forces of motion Energy
