Think, pair, share as many consequences of globalisation as you can think of. Categorise them into moral/social and environmental. Unit 1 AS Global Challenges for the Future. Has Globalisation come at a price? L/O: To understand the moral/social and environmental consequences of globalisation. To appreciate some of the strategies that can be used to manage these consequences.

Origins of Challenges for Going Global ? Increasing Urbanisation Movement Connections All of these have impacts on the human and physical environment! But not for all! Globalisation has come at a price: Economic globalisation =more choice …but also more homogeneity-MacDonalisation?! Demographic globalisation = more diversity, mixing… but also more tensions Consumerism has increased…but also ecological footprints and fears on environmental change and resource shortage

Consequences of globalisation What are the moral and social consequences of globalisation 2-speed countries, eg China or India? Unfair trade? Unfair wages? Poor working environments? Extension: Tourist enclaves and leakage of profits? What are the environmental consequences of Globalisation- Ecological footprints? The price of progress? Business as usual? Resource depletion, environmental degradation, desertification, deforestation, pollution? Have actual mini egs of all

Managing change for a better world Addressing social + economic Challenges associated with globalisation -Tackling poverty + inequality: Fair trade-Free trade-WTO, reforms, role of G8 Ethical shopping, eg UK Ethical Trade Initiative Effective Aid eg Oxfam, Farm Africa Addressing environmental Challenges associated with Globalisation- Green strategies Who? International agencies:UN IPCC, G8 Green TNCs/organisations? M+S?, Shell? Role of celebrities eg Coldplay, Comic Relief…. Role of green groups eg Greenpeace, FoE,WWF…. 2. How? The 5 Rs-reduce, reuse, renew ,recycle, respect- voluntary lifestyle choices or Legislation? Reduce/respect: Carbon off setting + trading- post Kyoto? Pros/Cons Biofuels? Role of Low and high Technology: Recycling = reduction: plastic bags, alternate week waste disposal ,green technology eg catalytic converter, hybrid cars Reduction: less food miles, farmers markets, home energy efficiency, desulphurisation units in power stations, solar power, wind turbines, Congestion Charging….. Do you know now why sustainable development involves 3 pillars?
