Divergent innovation approaches and their relevance for innovation for sustainability Solow (restraint) versus Malthus (technology): one ongoing discussion surrounds the different approaches to coping with environmental resource scarcity as the root cause of the current unsustainable situation (Martin and Kemper, 2012). On the one hand, the theories of Abraham Maslow (see Chapter 2) call for restraint in resource consumption and a curbing of population growth—a call for a strategy of austerity. Solow, on the other hand, advances the view that any resource can be replaced by some new technology and no resource is irreplaceable. Disruptive versus incremental innovation: a related, but different discussion lies in the distinction between incremental and disruptive innovation. Incremental innovation for resource consumption would, for instance, innovate to make existing “things” better—a good example is more ecoefficient production methods. Disruptive innovation, on the other hand, would lead to things radically different than what they used to be and replacing old things with new things (Christensen, 2013; Christensen et al., 2006).
