Imani Wimberly Hall Director Texas Christian University KCE It’s as easy as 123 Imani Wimberly Hall Director Texas Christian University

The Basics What does it stand for? What does it mean? Knowing, Connecting, Empowering What does it mean? We care about our residents and build relationships with residents How is it enacted? Survey by hands

Knowing How do we express our knowledge of others on a day to day basis? Oxford defines knowing as showing or suggesting that one has knowledge or awareness that is secret or known to only a few people Forming an individual and in-depth personal relationship with the residents of your community

Connecting Providing different group interactions to the residents of your community so that they can create “knowing” relationships with their peers

Empowering Create an atmosphere within your community to educate and encourage residents to create their own “Knowing” and “Connecting” opportunities that are not directly organized by student staff Not as frequent but well worth the effort

Who can KCE? It is an opportunity for all different types of people to KCE. People of different characteristics and personalities can all be strong at KCE-ing.

What will support the success of KCE?

Finding Your Base Bad Good A student emails you and you respond within days if at all. You get asked a question that you do not know the answer to so you tell them to ask someone else. A parent is upset with you despite the fact you had nothing to do with the situation so you argue and defend yourself. Your student emails you. You respond within 24 hours. Someone is on the phone and asks you a question you don’t know the answer to. You put them on hold to find the answer and then come back to them with it. For one reason or another, a parent is irate and you have to deal with it. While they are being offensive and it was not your doing, you work to the best of your ability to help them.

Adopting The Lifestyle The center of everything you do. The buy in from your staff Tie into all aspects of work Conduct, programs, hall visibility, emails, interactions, etc.

Programming Size doesn’t matter Make sure the students are the focus How do we make this most effective for them? What will our students benefit from the most? Impact can be the same no matter the budget

Magic Money Channel your inner Disney Small budget or large budget doesn’t matter Showing the care and going the extra mile

Results In 2008 we were struggling with student satisfaction, and looking to improve through the implementation of KCE By 2010 we were able to increase all of our satisfaction scores By 2016 we have steadily improved and help lead the field in many categories, and we are in the top 6 of all schools assessed in satisfaction and overall program effectiveness
