*I can apply the distributive property when rewriting and evaluating algebraic expressions. *I can represent a value using variables? *What strategies can be used for understanding and representing real situations using algebraic expressions and equations? MGSE7.EE.1 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients. MGSE7.EE.2 Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can clarify the problem and how the quantities in it are related. For example a + 0.05a = 1.05a means that adding a 5% tax to a total is the same as multiplying the total by 1.05 MGSE7.EE.3 Solve multistep real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals) by applying properties of operations as strategies to calculate with numbers, converting between forms as appropriate, and assessing the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies. MGSE7.EE.4 Use variables to represent quantities in a real‐world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.

Writing Expression A variable is any letter that represents an unknown number. A numerical expression has numbers and operations. A variable expression also has variables , it is sometimes called an algebraic expression.

Numerical Expressions Words Symbols Four times ten The sum of two and five Nine divided by the difference of six and one Five less than a number

Algebraic Expression Words Symbols The product of seven and n A minus b plus four The quotient of a number and two

Perimeter Area Distributing property Combining like terms

What strategies can be used for understanding and representing real situations using algebraic expressions and equations?

Teacher says: how do we solve equations What strategies can be used for understanding and representing real situations using algebraic expressions and equations? Teacher says: how do we solve equations Students say: The goal for solving an equation is to get the variable by itself. Mr. Lonely, he wants to be lonely, so I start by getting rid of all terms by the variable, but stop- I must perform inverse operations, what I do to one side I must do to the other.

What strategies can be used for understanding and representing real situations using algebraic expressions and equations? The blocks represent the crates, and each chip counter represents a 1- pound rock. How many rocks are in the crates using only this information.
