Server Virtualization and Consolidation Presented by Mike Bradley, Systems Administrator Kurt Giessel, Server Administrator Introduction by Tim Wrye, Director Instructional Computing

Introduction Virtualization presents an opportunity to reduce the costs of supporting and maintaining your data center by consolidating physical resources. We will road map our consolidation plan from researching virtualization technologies, selecting new hardware, to implementation and deployment of virtual hosts and guests.

The Situation Two distinct and separate data centers, Instructional and Administrative. Support multiple services. eDirectory and Active Directory Services DNS Proxy File Shares Web Services Power and cooling and administrative overhead

The Situation Responsibility to effectively and efficiently use tax payer resources. Rising costs of hardware, power and support. Increasing demand for new and innovative technology. Do "more with less."

The Project: A Phased Approach Planning and Research Pre-deployment Deployment Summary and review “The Future for Highline Community College”

Planning and Research February 2008 The Odd Couple: A.T. was looking for a cost efficient way to replace retiring servers, save energy costs and reduce RACK-CLUTTER in the data center. I.C. had been using the free VM Server version and ESX in a limited capacity and was looking for an opportunity to do virtualization in the “right way.”

Planning and Research Survey Says! Thirty day network consolidation survey was conducted by a VAR (what a dream!).

Planning and Research Hardware We wanted a blade system for efficiency and consolidation and scalability. Our choices were limited by our power constraints, 110 vs. 220. We elected to review SUN and Hewlett-Packard Selected the HP c3000 because of our familiarity with the hardware and management software iLO and SIM.

Planning and Research Software Parallels Virtuozzo XEN Microsoft Hyper-V VMWare esx SUN xVM Virtual Iron Stoneware (desktop virtualization)

Planning and Research Final Solution Hewlett-Packard Dell-Equallogic VMWare ESX 3.5 Enterprise Edition C3000 Enclosure Eight- BL 460 Blades 2xIntel Quad CPU 16GB RAM Physical interconnects. PS5500e SAN (2)

Pre Deployment: Planning and Testing June 2008

Pre Deployment: Planning and Testing Received hardware from HP, racked and stacked in the datacenter. Installed and setup switches, connections, and Vlans. Comment: Interconnects versus virtual network connect. Virtual connect is probably worth the additional money. Getting your head wrapped around the whole virtual thing.

Pre Deployment: Planning and Testing Installed VMware ESX Enterprise Edition - three times, hardware issues, update issues, and one more for good measure. Comment: What the HAL! Verify hardware and firmware is current and certified by VMWare. HP provided the latest mezzanine card which was due to be certified by VM for another 2-3 months (Oct 2008).

Pre Deployment: Planning and Testing Began testing the P2V, another setback, V2V fine, Windows P2V inconsistent, Linux P2V non-existent. We explored third-party vConverters, no support for Linux conversions. Generated support call to VMWare, “Phone tag and waiting game.” Comment: VMWare tech support is great, very knowledgeable, thorough, and committed to resolving all issues (6-7 hour support call). Introduced to Virtual Converter Beta!

Pre Deployment: Planning and Testing Completed Pre-deployment and “testing” last week of January 2009

Deployment (More Testing?) February – March 2009 P2V and V2V conversions going well. Fifty-four total virtual machines distributed across three resource pools; Production (Critical) Production (Normal) and Test.

Deployment (More Testing?) February – March 2009 We planned to convert 65-70 servers out of our combined 80 total. Currently 54 virtual servers are running, of that number 20 are new or test boxes, watch the server sprawl. The “Bad SANta” issue, MPC setback, VMware support comes though in the clinch. Investigate new SAN solution to meet multiple needs within the enterprise; two Dell-Equallogic PS5500e SAN units, is our answer.

Summary: Lessons Learned so far… April 2009 VMWare training. Definitely, start your deployment immediately, before your new knowledge goes stale. The intricacies’ of VMWare configuration and tools or not real intuitive, you get better with practice. If you choose a blade solution and a “virtual-connect“ network option is available, go for it. It will save time, simplify your network connectivity and reduce cable clutter and confusion.

Summary: Lessons Learned so far… April 2009 Work closely with your in-house partners, to avoid the “virtual roadblock.” The virtualization concept can be difficult for some to digest. Initially, we recommend you approach virtual entity as you would a physical. Work closely with your VMWare hardware partner. Double check hardware and application compatibility and support.

Summary: Lessons Learned so far… April 2009 Power and cooling calculator from Microsoft Hyper-V Virtualization tools. http://www.hyper-green.com Conversion goal at 53% estimate current annual savings, based on regional power costs, to be $19,468.00. The savings after 82% “full” conversion goal is estimated at $33,800.00 annually.
