Extended Essay

Why You Should be Excited Practice for the plethora of research papers you will write in college. * You will learn how to effectively research and learn the most efficient ways to write an academic paper. You can discuss EE with college admittance officers.

DP requirement Part of the IB core. Rigorous Intellectual Scholarly

What is Academic Writing? 1. Writing done by scholars for scholars. Will help you learn processes of reading, thinking, arguing and writing in an academic method. 2. Devoted to topics and questions that are of interest to the academic community 3. Presents the reader with an informed (researched) argument. Must inform and argue Must include research NO SUMMARY! 4,000 words

Choose from the following topics Group 1-English Literature Biology Chemistry Computer science Design Technology Environmental systems & societies Film Geography History Math Music Physics Psychology Theatre Visual arts

The Rules Choose a topic in a subject where you have taken or are taking the class. * Receiving a passing EE score requires familiarity with subject specific academic language and concepts. Your supervisor is educated in that subject/topic. It will be difficult, if not impossible, for a supervisor to provide knowledge and expertise in a subject they don’t teach. Your EE is scored by 3 subject specific readers. A math teacher will only score math EE’s.

Supervisor List Literature Any IB language arts teacher or Brimhall Biology Any bio teacher teaching IB or AP Chemistry Any chem teacher teaching IB or AP Computer Science Kenney room 901 Design technology Owens room 210 Environmental systems & societies Any enviro teacher teaching IB or AP Film Brimhall room 954 geography Any geography teacher teaching IB or AP History Any history teacher teaching IB or AP Math Any math teacher teaching IB or AP Physics Lum room 817 Psychology Vaughan room 104 Theatre Stempinski/Reid room 601 Visual arts Any IB art teacher, Bustany (photo) room 305, Owens (art, design) room 210

EE Baby Steps 1. Choose a subject and topic that interests you. 2. You will have class time to read the EE guidelines and subject specific criteria. Download the guide as well. 3. Brainstorm possible topics. 4. Do a preliminary Google search. Is the topic/ argument viable? 5. Jot down key words that help further your search. 6. Save interesting/relevant articles WHEN YOU FIND THEM. Don’t rely on your memory!! 7. Decide on a topic of research that interests you and formulate your research question. 8. Have it approved by me. 9. Find a supervisor. 10. Research! Research! Research!

Finding Reputable Source-EBSCO Use a generic username and password to access this database. You will not have the ability to change or customize your own database login credentials. You will have the ability to create your own MYEBSCO folders account. These accounts are unrelated to the generic database login information. These "personal" folders are unique to a specific user (i.e. student or teacher) and are only used for: saving searches, saving articles, setting up journal alerts, etc. Students can use the databases without a MYEBSCO folder, so it's completely optional. The non-MYEBSCO folder users just won't have the ability to save their research for future access.

EBSCO Database How do students access Centennial’s EBSCO account? - Use the link below to access the database. - You can also use your phone/tablet to find EBSCO on our Cen10Huskies app under "Resources." - On the Centennial website under the Media Center tab. - All VDI computers on campus have an EBSCO icon on the homepage for access at school. Username: centennialhigh Password: huskies http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&custid=s9312850

EE steps Show me your 5 sources. Create an outline for me to check the day of finals (this is your final in my class). Take outline to a preliminary meeting with your supervisor. Research more where info is vague or incomplete. Write rough draft over summer break. This is your summer work, due on the 5th day of senior year. Abstract, final draft and works cited due by end of September. Meet with supervisor throughout process to ensure a successful EE!!! Final step: Have vive voce with supervisor. Upload EE to Ibis.
