And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, "What have You done?“ Daniel 4:34-35, NKJ

The Commitment of Jesus Brother Friend The Commitment of Jesus

Jesus’ Commitment As-- Brother Jesus’ Commitment As-- Brother 1. Brother (Prov. 17:17b) To whom? Heb. 2:11; 1:5 What does this commitment involve? Heb. 2:17-18; 4:15-16; 5:5-8 (1 Pet. 3:8) IV. of a brother (Prov. 17:17 genuine concern, common experiences) A. A brother is someone who shares a parent and thus the basic, important experiences of life B. Is Jesus a brother? to whom? 1. Yes, Heb. 2:11 2. Heb. 1:5 all who are children of His Father 3. Mormons say a spirit brother to Satan---many are sincere, but they follow another Jesus C. What are His commitments as a brother? Prov. 17:17 for our adversity, which He has experienced 1. Heb. 2:17-18 He was made to be like us and suffered temptation as we do (single, unfaithful siblings,...) 2. Heb. 4:15-16 His throne is open to us when we need mercy and grace 3. Heb. 5:5-8 shows the many joys/rewards of suffering in obedience and submission D. 1 Pet. 3:8 His commitment as a brother is our model for our commitment to each other

Jesus’ Commitment As-- 2. Head (directs each part) Jesus directed the diverse twelve apostles Jesus directs the diverse body/church 1 Tim. 6:17-19; 1 Pet. 3:1-6; 1 Cor. 14:26, 32 V. of a head (direct each part according to ability) A. The head coordinates all the parts of the body, consistent with each one’s purpose and ability B. Only Jesus, having the commitment of a head, could have kept the twelve apostles together 1. Matthew, tax collector, hated by most Jews 2. Simon, the zealot (killed Jewish-sympathizers...like Jewish tax collectors) 3. Desires for favoritism 4. Potential for jealousy as Jesus was clearly closer with three than the other nine 5. He patiently taught and developed each one for the work of the present and future C. Jesus is committed to every part of this church, and every church of His 1. There are specific things mentioned in Scripture that fit you in ways that do not fit everyone 2. Rich. 1 Tim. 6:17-19 3. Wives, with unbelieving husbands 1 Pet. 3:1-6 you have no idea what plans God may have if you will... 4. All 1 Cor. 14:26, 32 a. even those God miraculously taught had to decide if they would do what they could do b. for us to edify when we come together, many things must happen (bills paid, gates open-locked, teachers prepared, songs thoughtfully prepared, . . .). c. How can you contribute to all that is required for our assemblies? i. If you don’t know, have you ever asked someone or asked to learn how? ii. We have lots of men---how many of you are helping teach our classes? If we have only a few men who can teach the Bible to a fifth or sixth-grader, then, as a church, we are missing something in our growth. D. Our head (Jesus) is committed to providing opportunities for the wealthy, wife, and worker to grow by faith.

Jesus’ Commitment As-- Friend 3. Friend (Prov. 17:17a) You have no friend who can always help Jesus’ friendship is time-tested Jn. 15:13; Rom. 8:38-39 VI. of a friend (Prov. 17:17 love at all times) A. You don’t have a friend who can help, literally, at all times 1. Every friend you have is limited by time, place, knowledge, and wisdom 2. Many earthly friends have, or will, disappoint you, and a few will abandon you 3. Even the best of friends are separated by death leaving us with only memories of a friendship. B. Jesus has proven His commitment for all times 1. Time, geography, knowledge, and wisdom are no barriers to His friendship 2. Jn. 15:13 He kept His commitment to give His life for your friendship—He will not disappoint 3. Rom. 8:38-39 His is the only friendship that will not end at death (but actually grow) C. How does your commitment to earthly friendship compare with your commitment to friendship with J? 1. Are there things you do for family or friends, even that you don’t have to, that you withhold from Jesus? a. we look for ways to be with and stay in communication with friends b. at almost all cost, we keep our schedules open for days and activities meaningful to family 2. Whose friendship gets your best? How do you express it?

Jesus’ Commitment As-- 4. God (love) True love is from God like true religion Jn. 15:9 (Eph. 5:25) Jn. 15:10 (Lk. 22:42) Jn. 15:12 (Rom. 5:6) VIII. of God (love) A. Our culture will tell you that all religions and “non-religions” teach love 1. If you investigate that claim, you soon see that ppl use the same word but have very different ideas 2. If God did not reveal love then all ideas of it are valid, w/ or w/o God, our spirit, family, or enemy. B. Jesus revealed the love that reveals His commitment 1. Jn. 15:9 Love of the leader for those in submission (Eph. 5:25) 2. Jn. 15:10 Love of the follower for the leader, requires obedience (Lk. 22:42) 3. Jn. 15:12 Love among equals, that is willing to give and serve (v13; Rom. 5:6 friend and enemy) 4. His commitment is to love you when you are His enemy or His friend, but this love does not override His love for His Father---those who die refusing to love His Father will face Him as a consuming fire (Heb. 12:31) C. Your love is either growing and becoming more like His or weakening and becoming less like His--which? 1. Measure it by what you say and do to people over you (boss, husband, parents) 2. Measure it by what you did this past week toward people you are over (what you didn’t have to do but did) 3. Measure it by what you are willing to do this week toward your equals (family, friend, foe, saved, or lost).
