0-3 Operations with Integers Goals: Add, subtract multiply and divide integers Use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve real life problems

Vocabulary Opposites – two points that are the same distance from zero. Absolute Value – distance from zero (never negative)

Opposites Find the opposite of each number: 2 -5 -6 13

Absolute value Find the absolute value of each number: 3 -16 38 -5

Addition Examples -2 + 5 = 3 = -4 = -12 = 6 = 0 2 + (-6) -4 + (-8) -3 + 5 + (-6) 5 + (-2) + 3 -4 + 6 + (-2) = 3 = -4 = -12 = 6 = 0

Subtraction Examples -4 – 3 = -7 = -1 = 6 = 4 = -37 = 38 10 – 11 12 – 6 -2 – (-6) -15 – 22 25 – (-13) = -7 = -1 = 6 = 4 = -37 = 38

Multiplication Examples (–9)(5) (–3)(–3) (–6)(4)(–2) (2)(–1)(3) (–2)2 (–3)3 = –45 = 9 = 48 = –6 = 4 = –27

Division Examples 10 ÷ (–2) –15 ÷ (–3) –16 ÷ 4 –112 ÷ (–8) 96 ÷ (–6) = –5 = 5 = –4 = 14 = –16

Practice Examples on Whiteboards

Word Problem #1 You are in a submarine that is 500 feet below the surface of the water. You go down 150 more feet. What is your current depth? -650 feet

Word Problem #2 You borrowed $10 from your uncle. You paid him back $5. How much money do you owe now? $5

Word problem #3 A flying squirrel descends from a tree with a velocity of –6 feet per second. Find how far the squirrel has descended after 3.5 seconds. –21 feet

Word Problem #4 Your aunt lends you $175 to buy a guitar. You will give her $25 per week. How long will it take to pay her back? 7 weeks
