RENEWABLE ENERGY 2

Do we need other types of energy sources?

Non-Renewable Energy Non renewable Energy that cannot be made again by nature in a short period of time.

So what is a GOOD alternative to Non-Renewable Energy?

Renewable Energy Renewable Energy Energy that can be remade often by nature in a short period of time. Ocean

Renewable Energy Types Hydro Solar Biomass Geothermal Wind Ocean

Motion Sources (Kinetic Energy) Hydro Wind Ocean Wave Current/Tides

Heat Sources (Thermal Energy) Solar Biomass Geothermal Ocean Thermal

Renewable Energies are Sustainable Resources Means nature can remake, or sustain, them. So, if we work with nature to sustain it, we will ALWAYS have a means of living.

Today’s World Early Hawaiians relied on water as one of the main sources to sustain life. Today we rely on electricity to sustain life. What types of renewable energy sources can we use now to sustain life?

Possible Renewable Energy by Island Lanai Molokai Maui Kauai Oahu Hawaii Ocean Hydro Geothermal Biomass Solar Wind Source: “A Catalog of Potential Sites for Renewable Energy in Hawaii” by Global Energy Concepts, LLC, Dec. 2006

List the types of RENEWABLE Energy Sources available in HAWAII 4. 5. 6.

Wind Energy

What is Wind? Moving Air! AIR

How is Wind Made? Earth heated by sun Land heats up faster than ocean (daytime) Land air rises while ocean air replaces it Moving Air….Therefore WIND!!

Can We Catch Wind?

Many People Have! 5000 yrs ago Egypt --Nile 500 AD Persia (Iran)

850 AD Polynesians to HI Islands 1300 Holland

Wind turbines (electricity) 1880 U.S. (grind meal, pump water, cut wood) 1920 U.S. (electricity) 1980 - Now Wind turbines (electricity)

Wind in Hawaii? Lanai Molokai Maui Kauai Oahu Hawaii Ocean Hydro Geothermal Biomass Solar Wind Source: “A Catalog of Potential Sites for Renewable Energy in Hawaii” by Global Energy Concepts, LLC, Dec. 2006

Wind Turbines

What is a Wind Turbine? Machine that “catches” wind with blades Uses wind’s kinetic energy to create electricity

Activity – Windy Campus Split into 3 groups led by teacher, tech & hmrm teacher Each group Equipment Campus map (each group assigned section of campus & altitude, ie ground, 2nd flr, field, middle of buildings) Anemometer Wind turbine Multimeter Take equipment & find max wind spot w/in area using anemometer. Record spot on map, wind direction & speed. Place turbine at spot and record time, voltage (V) & current (I). Repeat measurements 2 more times at 2-5 minute intervals. Return to classroom Calc turbine power (V x I), graph power vs. time, how many turbines needed to operate household items Class discussion Best place on campus Pros & cons of placing real turbine at the various spots

Wind Tower How Does It Work?

How Much Energy Can We Get? The BIGGER they are, the MORE WIND they catch! Small  <100 kW Large  ~5 MW (Typical home in Hawaii uses 600 kW per hour) (Microwave can use 900 W)

Where Do We Put Them? More wind at higher altitudes & open areas SO……. Tops of smooth rounded hills Open plains Shorelines Mountain gaps

Wind Farm Renewable Energy A Wind Farm is many wind turbines grouped together to generate bulk electrical power. Kamaoa Wind Farm South Point, Hawaii

Lalamilo Wind Farm South Kohala, Hawaii Hawi Wind Farm Hawi, Hawaii Lalamilo Wind Farm South Kohala, Hawaii Wind farm construction video of some sort Kaheawa Wind Farm Kaheawa, Maui

Small Turbines Where to put them House Building roof Pole Saunders Hall UH Manoa Ideally put at least 33 ft (10m) above & 250 ft (76m) away from obstructions

The Good, the bad & the ugly Clean fuel No air pollution No water pollution

the good, The Bad & the ugly Wind doesn’t blow all the time Noise Visual Visual – blocks view—casts shadow

the good, the bad & The Ugly Wildlife Environment (construction) Wind Turbine Destruction Wind Turbine Fire in Germany Wildlife birds

Other Possible Wind Sources? Hurricanes Wind – 1,500,000,000 kW ½ of electrical energy produced worldwide! Tornados or funnel clouds How do we catch it?
