Employer led… “This suite of qualifications would be great, as often it is straight into the heavy stuff and often the basics are forgotten. Theory work is often nothing like the real world in the office and a gentle ease in would be a better way to start off and pave the way for the Foundation and later levels in the course.” Louise Richardson MAAT, Financial Accountant MS Importance of employer engagement throughout development and delivery of qualifications.

Access Creativity – Ideas for Engaging Students Mark Owen

In our session today Highlight approaches to the delivery of content to Level 1 students that will build confidence in the use of subject specific language and create opportunities to develop real life working example through paired and group work.

Lucky Dip What? - An activity where students pick a card from a box. Cards contain terms or definitions. Provides an opportunity to stretch and challenge students through the terms printed on cards and the questioning techniques used. Learning can be extended by asking students to create their own definitions for sharing as part of class displays or online.

Lucky Dip How? - Create cards based on subject terminology. To stretch students cards can be colour coded to indicate a level of difficulty. Students select a card at the start or end of the session. Tutor questions based on card selected or gives the option for cards to be traded.

3D Card Sort What? - A card sort activity where students are introduced to a process; eg calculating an invoice. Students match term with definition and the relevant part of the calculation. Accompanying handout can be used to consolidate learning and to provide a space to stretch students to create a further example.

3D Card Sort How? - Create card sort based on process. Ask students to complete in groups

Invoice Activity What? - An activity in which students create their own content for checking by others. Students gain confidence in their use of calculations by varying the complexity of what they produce; possibly with tutor direction. All students can check their learning. Can be adapted for the delivery of daybooks and cash book.

Invoice Activity How? - Students are given a blank template. Give each pair 10 minutes to create the document. They can make errors if they wish! Allow 10 mins for students to swap with a different pair so that work can be checked. Students to feedback on any errors found.

Plicker Cards What? - An interactive quiz tool in which students are tested using multiple choice or true/false questions. Students can be included irrespective of whether they have access to a mobile device. Tutors gain an insight into skill gaps through results analysis. www.plickers.com

Picker Cards How? – A library of questions are created and assigned to groups. Cards are read with a mobile phone/tablet. Results can be displayed on screen.

Any questions?
