Background Info On The Battle & King Philip II King of Spain – late 1500’s Wanted Spain to be a “World Power”. Mad at England – they dropped out the Catholic Church and they robbed the Spanish treasure ships. Mad at both France and Holland for siding with England, and also for robbing the Spanish treasure ships. Spain decided to attack England and make an example out of England.

Known as the Queen’s pirate. (Queen Elizabeth I) In 1577, Drake sailed into “The Spanish Lake”, the Pacific Ocean. Drake robbed some of Spain’s richest ships. Drake escaped the Spanish by sailing around the world. Only the second person to accomplished this feat. When Drake returned to England after his “pleasure cruise”, the Queen made him a Knight. Drake’s thievery and bravado in sailing around the world, Spain the most powerful country in the world, became a laughing stock to the rest of the world!

The Naval Battle Begins! The Spanish Armada (Fleet) 130 warships 19,000 soldiers 8,000 sailors The English Navy,140 ships of various sizes and types.(eg. fishing boats, cargo ships) Was fought in The English Channel Lasted for days

Battle Results,England Won! Why?? Home turf – English Channel English ships smaller, agile, and faster. Spanish ships were too large for the narrow channel. England used fire ships. Storm of gale force winds blew ships ashore. Spain was overconfident.

Significant Factors of the Defeat of the “Spanish Armada”.(SF) Spain would never regain her naval power. England grew to be the power of the seas. (until WWII) England and Europe were free to colonize the New World, except in Spanish areas.
