Academic integrity All the work you submit must be original You must not cheat or copy If you do breach academic integrity guidelines, there are consequences “Academic integrity” refers to the University’s expectation that all the work students submit as part of their assessment has been written or created by the student; that the work is original. If a student submits work that is not original (i.e. the student has cheated or copied), there are consequences. If a lecturer or tutor detects a breach of academic integrity, he or she will follow a process set down by the University. In every case of poor academic practice or academic misconduct, a note will be added to the student’s file or transcript.

(Often the first assignment for the semester) Minimal errors in identifying the source (for example, missing year, missing title, missing page numbers) OR One incidence of text-matching that is not referenced Student will receive feedback from the lecturer or tutor about correct practice in academic writing. The student may need to be educated concerning how to correctly paraphrase; how to correctly quote material; how to correctly reference. Students may have a reduction of marks as per the marking rubric.

Examples (or provide specific examples from your discipline) Type of breach Examples (or provide specific examples from your discipline) Consequences Poor academic practice (Often later assignments in the semester) Multiple errors (within one assessment task) in identifying the source (for example, missing year, missing title, missing page numbers) OR More than one incidence of text- matching that is not referenced – source cannot be identified One incident of clear copying, including copying from previous assignment Penalties will be applied, although the lecturer’s goal is to educate the student about how to improve their practice. The student’s behaviour is knowing, intentional, reckless, wilful, or premeditated; and/or The conduct is a repeat breach (generally indicated on student’s transcript); and/or There are no compelling mitigating circumstances to explain the behaviour; and/or Student’s explanation is inconsistent The case will be referred to ASQO. It will beinvestigated by the Inquiry Officer as per the flowchart. Penalties may include one or more of the following: Reprimanding Requirement that student attend academic skills sessions Counselling. In signing the document, students are agreeing that their work is original. Students are required to state, when they submit work for assessment, that the work is original.
