The permanent memory of a computer Objective: To learn about the motherboard. Warm-up: What is a hard drive? The permanent memory of a computer

Motherboard Architecture

Motherboards Trace Bus Motherboards connect all devices in a computer Comprised of many individual circuit traces grouped together to form busses. Device Trace Bus Device

System Bus The system bus is also called the front side bus (FSB) The higher the FSB, the faster the machine Processor CPU FSB North Bridge (GMCH)

Exercise CPU right hand Northbridge left hand Front Side Bus is your head

The Chipset is a combination of the North and Southbridge. Northbridge handles high speed (i.e. CPU) Southbridge handles slow speed (i.e. keyboard)

Buying a Motherboard Form Factor FSB Speed Chipset CPU (Central Processing Unit, the brain of the computer) Socket Type Ram Type (Random Access Memory, the temporary memory, is volatile) Expansion Case Motherboard

Open MS Word and draw the diagram SATA IDE USB Audio LAN KB Mouse Floppy Serial Parallel FWH SIO South Bridge (ICH) North Bridge (GMCH) Clock Generator Processor System management bus LPC bus Host clock PCIe x16 Bus System memory PCI clock USB clock Hublink clock PCIe x1 FSB/Host Bus DMI VGA PCI Bus Open MS Word and draw the diagram Email: gordonsigler@gmail.com Subject: Period Name Date

Visual Vocab Word Meaning Image Connects all parts Front side bus Motherboard Connects all parts FSB Front side bus Chipset North and south bridges RAM Random Access Memory CPU Central Processing Unit Trace Wire pathway Form Factor How parts fit in a computer

First do your vocab and lab write-up! Motherboard Drawing Write your names on the front (on blank paper). Draw each part of the motherboard. Label each part in pen. Color each part. Use the handout as reference. First do your vocab and lab write-up!
