Accounting Society General Body Meeting #1 Monday, August 28th 2017

Fall 2017 Executive Board

President – Kevin Wong Email - kxw5310@psu.edu ​Kevin is a junior from Cherry Hill, NJ and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting with a minor in Legal Environment of Business. Kevin began his involvement in the Accounting Society as the Vice President Intern during his Freshman year and then Director of Public Relations and Alumni Relations his Sophomore year and he is looking to serve the members as President this upcoming year. Outside the Accounting Society, Kevin is an active brother of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity and volunteers on the Donor Alumni Relations committee for THON. Kevin is an avid sports fan rooting hopelessly for his Philadelphia sports teams and enjoys playing both baseball and tennis during his free time. 

Vice President – Brittany Hernon Email - bth5166@psu.edu Brittany is a junior from Pittsburgh, PA and is pursuing a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accounting in the Integrated MAcc program. Brittany began her involvement with the Accounting Society as the Vice President Intern during her sophomore year and is excited to serve as the Vice President for the 2017-2018 school year. Outside the Accounting Society, Brittany enjoys running and exercising which is reflected through her involvement in the Penn State CHAARG chapter and the Penn State Club Swim Team.

Secretary – Shany Choi Email - sbc5222@psu.edu Shany is a senior from South Korea, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Shany served in the Accounting Society as the Social Chair in her Junior year and is looking forward to serve the members of the Accounting Society as Secretary this upcoming year. Shany is also involved in the Economic Research Analyst and the Penn State Investment Association.

Treasurer – Zach Newman Email - zsn5009@psu.edu Zach is a senior from New Hope, PA and is pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting with a minor in International Business. Zach joined the Accounting Society in his sophomore year and earned Distinguished Member Status. He was then selected as Workshop Chair for the following semester, and now is very excited to serve as Treasurer. Zach is also on a THON committee and enjoys playing tennis and cooking. ​

Director of Service – Meaghan O’Connor Email - meo5202@psu.edu Meaghan is a junior pursuing a B.S. in Accounting with a minor in German. She has been involved in the Penn State Accounting Society since her first semester at Penn State, and has previously held the positions of Secretary Intern and Social Chair. She is looking forward to expanding the Accounting Society’s involvement in the Penn State community through new service projects. Meaghan also serves as a Chair for Penn State’s Women in Business’s Powerful Women Paving the Way Conference, and is an active member in Penn State Lion Scouts and Delta Gamma sorority. Director of Public Relations & Alumni Relations – Charlene Binen Email - cub70@psu.edu Charlene is a sophomore from Potomac, MD and is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. During her Freshmen year, Charlene joined the Accounting Society and is pleased to serve as the club’s Director of Public Relations and Alumni Relations in this upcoming academic year. Outside the Accounting Society, Charlene is an active brother of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity and served as her pledge class’ Director of Community Service. 

THON Chair – Alex Jankowski Email - apj5097@psu.edu Alex is a junior from Downingtown, PA and is pursuing his degree in Accounting. He was admitted early and will take part in the One Year MAcc Program at Penn State. Alex began his involvement in the Accounting Society as an active member in the fall of his Sophomore year, and will serve as THON Chair for the Accounting Society this upcoming year. Around campus, Alex is also an active member in the Sports Business Club, the Logistics Coordinator for his Success Networking Team in the National Society of Leadership and Success, and takes part in IM Sports.

Workshop Chair – Amolvir Taunque Email - ast5251@psu.edu  Amolvir is a junior from Dubai and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Amolvir began his involvement in the Accounting Society as a member during his Sophomore year and and is looking to serve the members of the Accounting as the Workshop Chair this upcoming semester. Amolvir also serves as the International Development Chair for the Smeal Student council, and volunteers on the Rules and Regulations committee for THON. Amolvir enjoys traveling, exercising and is keeping up with the latest technology news.

Director of Social Activities – Hunter Bradley Email: huntbrad10@gmail.com Hunter is a junior pursuing a B.S. in Accounting with minors in Sociology and Economics. She has been with the Accounting Society since her sophomore year and is hoping to make the Accounting Society a more social community. Hunter is also involved with THON and World in Conversation on campus.

Webmaster – Gillian Black Gillian is a sophomore pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting with a double minor in International Business and Political Science. For the upcoming fall semester, Gillian will serve as the Webmaster for the Accounting Society. Outside of the Accounting Society, Gillian is involved with the Sapphire Leadership Program, Beta Alpha Psi, and volunteers on the operations committee for THON. During her free time, Gillian loves going to the beach and spending time with her friends and family.

Advisor – Charlie Smith Professor Charles H. Smith served as the Chair of the Department of Accounting at Penn State, January 1987 to June 2000. He has received several teaching awards at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and in executive development programs. He received the PICPA Outstanding Educator Award in 2004, and the AICPA Award for Distinguished Achievements in Accounting Education in 2005. His publications include books, monographs, service as a foreign correspondent for a journal, articles in U.S. and foreign journals and reprints. Professor Smith has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Arizona State University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Washington (Seattle), and the University of Cape Town.

How to become an Active Member?

Active Membership Requirements Active Membership:  Requires at least 6 events across the three categories below to be considered an active member & MUST attend the Annual G. Kenneth Nelson banquet in the fall. Break down Professional (Attendance of 3 events required) Examples: Professional Events and Excel in Excel Volunteer (Attendance of 1 event required) Examples: Fundraiser participation, Service Events, VITA, THON General (Attendance of 2 events required)           Examples: General Body Meeting, Committee Membership  Distinguished member: Requires at least 8 events to be considered a distinguished member.

Chair Positions The Accounting Society is creating a new opportunity for members of the organization to get involved. Chair positions will work under the current Accounting Society executive board. Accounting Society Intern Program The Accounting Society Intern Program is a unique opportunity available for freshmen and sophomore members of the Accounting Society to get involved in the organization. Interns have the opportunity to shadow an experienced Accounting Society executive board member - President, Vice President, Secretary, & Treasurer. Interns learn how to effectively operate a student-run organization in the Smeal College of Business, and to gain experience and enhance their leadership skills. The application and interview process will occur at the beginning of the fall semester.  The Intern position does not guarantee the future executive board position within the Accounting Society. Accounting Society Mentoring Program The Accounting Society mentoring program is a program that will allow older and more senior members of the organization to assist younger members with their transition to Penn State and the Smeal College of Business. Mentors will be available within the Accounting Society to answer questions pertaining to the accounting major, academics and the Penn State community.  Mentors also help students discover all of the events and opportunities that the Accounting Society has to offer throughout the school year. ​ The mentoring program will begin in the fall semester and is looking for both potential mentors (sophomores, juniors, & seniors) and potential mentees for the upcoming semester.
