Intro to Electricity

What IS Electricity?

A form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles

How do we harness this ENERGY?

Conductor Something that allows electricity to flow Examples; metal Water air

Insulator something that does NOT let electricity flow Examples Glass Plastic Rubber Porcelain

Power Source Something that supplies electricity Examples; Battery Generator solar panel

Battery Portable power source that has a positive and negative. The negative has extra electrons. They want to move to the positive side

Circuit path for electricity to flow

Load Something that uses electricity Example Toaster Ipod Dvd player

Short Circuit unwanted contact of wires or parts in a circuit resulting in damage or malfunction of the circuit Example: two bare wires touching

Voltage, Resistance & Current

Voltage (V) The “push” of electricity in a circuit Measured in VOLTS (V)

Resistance (R) The resistance to flow of electricity Measured in OHMS (Ω)

Current (I) The rate of flow of electricity in a circuit Measured in AMPHERES (A)
