Math in Physics!* *I am well aware that this is physics class and physics is considered a science. On some of our more math-heavy days, please refrain from telling me “I thought this was physics, not math” or from asking “isn’t this supposed to be a science class?” Thank you

Warm-up Name at least one animal for every letter of the alphabet Hint: you might need to use specific breeds or types of animals for some letters A: ________ B: ________ C: ________ … Z: ________

Math in physics Math is used to explain physics, and physics gives math a practical application Please refrain from informing me that “this is physics class, not math.” I am well aware of that fact The math in this course is not particularly challenging...figuring out what math to do and what numbers to use is the challenge In college, you will use calculus in physics (and I will, at times, do so here), but we won’t be using stuff beyond Alg. II/Trig

Math in IB Physics As you may or may not know, IB is an international program headquartered in Switzerland (so I guess it should be programme) It tends to follow European vocabulary and formatting with math maths A few things right off the bat you will see: Gradient = slope Axes of graphs are labelled Title / unit Unit labels are written in normal font, symbols of physical quantities are written in italics Units are written in exponential form i.e. m/s = ms-1

Math Skills Practice You have the rest of class to work. Feel free to work with others...just make sure they aren’t doing it for you! This covers order of operations, solving equations with numbers and without (rearranging formulas), trig, and graphing Whatever you don’t finish in class, please have ready for tomorrow
