Class Objective Students know the role of psychology in the design world Students understand the gestalt and figure – ground principle

Seeing is Believing Realism in art and design is not absolute, but a convention that our culture and personal background create from visual data.

Graphic Design is not just designing external visuals Graphic Design is not just designing external visuals. It’s about concept and content that can move people. Different mind pattern will create different influences, this is part of perception.

Main Principle in Design Gestalt Figure and ground

Gestalt Gestalt theory is talking about how people see something (especially in 2D) where elements that is captured by eyes is understood as a whole by searching for simplicity.

Figure and ground This principle describe how human, intentionally or unintentionally, choose from a group of stimuli, which one will act as a main figure and which one act as a ground. stable figure/ground, reversible figure/ground, ambigous figure/ground

stable figure/ground reversible figure/ground ambigous figure/ground

Organization Principle Principle of Proximity : by means of proximity between elements Principle of Similarity : by means of similarity between elements  Principle of Closure : Familiar object is seen as a complete element although it isn’t so.

Principle of Proximity Principle of Similarity Principle of Closure

Real life example Gossip can be received quite different from the reality. Fact which is being received is being added from one people to the other people on a chain simply because it look relevant, thus the information can be quite different from the original one.

Psychology factor that influences perception The deciding factor is the expectancy of the receiver. This is influenced by: The availability of prior information   Lack of information can caused different perception Needs People tend to make perception based on his/her need at that time Past Experiences Experience can influence people when percepting things

Emotion Emotion can influence people by acting as a figure instead of ground. Impression Salient stimuli can also influence people, big picture, contrasting color, loud voices can make people to focus on. Context Context is a deciding factor. It can be social, culture or physical surrounding. Context will give a very deciding ground on how a figure is being looked at. Same figure with different context will give different perception.
