Presentation transcript:

Characteristics Of Stars Galaxy: A collection of stars, gases and dust. Universe: Contains billions of galaxies.

Types of Galaxies 1. Spiral 2. Elliptical 3. Irregular

Spiral Galaxies: Arms spiral outward like a pinwheel Our galaxy, The Milky Way, is a spiral galaxy Middle aged Galaxy Sometimes has a bar running through the middle – barred spirals Some gas and dust

Elliptical Galaxies: Circle or elliptical (oval) shape Can look like flattened balls or a football. Have billions of stars, but little gas and dust. The oldest galaxies

Irregular Galaxies No definite shape Less stars and more gas and dust Youngest galaxy Example: Large Magellanic Cloud

Types of Galaxies Elliptical Spiral Irregular This kind of galaxy has an oval or circular shape. It is the oldest of the galaxies. Spiral This kind of galaxy has two or more “arms.” It is shaped like a pinwheel. This galaxy is middle aged. Irregular These galaxies have no particular shape. They are oddly shaped. These are young galaxies.
