President John Tyler pushed for annexation of Texas (then an independent nation) as a part of his 1844 reelection bid. Southerners favored annexing Texas as a slave state whereas northerners feared it would give slaves too much power in Congress. James Polk offered to buy disputed area from Mexico along with what is now New Mexico and California. Mexico refused and war broke out. Ended in 1848 with Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo as Mexico ceded New Mexico and California for $15 million. The Mexican War
