Lesson 4 – Planting Techniques and Evaluation Forest Science I Unit 6 – Reforestation Original by Jonathan H. Stribling December 3, 2001 Modified by Georgia Agriculture Education Curriculum Office July 2004

Seedling Survival is largely Dependent Upon Planting time Quality Seedlings Seedling Storage Technique Environmental Conditions

Planting Techniques Hand Planting Tools Dibble Hoedad An Experienced Planter may Plant 1000 seedlings per day by hand

Planting Techniques Machine Planting One crew machine planting may plant 8000-10,000 seedlings per day

Avoid Planting In Extremely Dry Soils because the seedlings will lack moisture In Extremely Wet Soils because the seedlings will lack oxygen

Optimum Planting Conditions 35-60 degrees F Relative Humidity greater than 40% Wind Speeds less than 10 .mph
