First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli 4/22/2018 LHC main splices today: busbars NC From M. Koratzinos Measurements done at RT (and attempted at 80 K) Non-invasive (“Biddle” measurements): accuracy 10 to 17 Ω (depending on the sector) for the RB, 26 to 36 Ω for the RQ, 5 sectors only Invasive: (“R16” measurements): accuracy 1 Ω, but limited number and biased. ~15% limit 7 TeV operation (~0.5 to 2% limit 5 TeV operation) 18 October, 2010 First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli 4/22/2018 The Splices Task Force Mandate (November 2009): to review the status of all superconducting splices in the LHC machine and prepare the necessary consolidation actions for 7 TeV operation. Initial time frame: 6-8 months starting November 2009, so that the shutdown 2010-2011 could be adequately organized (→ 2012) Members from different areas: F. Bertinelli, N. Catalan Lasheras, P. Fessia, C. Garion, S. Mathot, A. Perin, C. Scheuerlein, S. Sgobba, H. Ten Kate, J.P. Tock, A. Verweij, G. Willering Work priorities: Design of main 13 kA IC splice; 6 kA “praying hands”; “other” splices www.cern.ch/LHCsplices (follow Minutes and Shared Documents) 18 October, 2010 First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli

First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli 4/22/2018 LHC Splices Review Mandate: to review CERN’s plans and consolidation actions concerning the superconducting splices in the LHC machine for 7 TeV operation Members: George Ganetis / BNL, Toru Ogitsu / KEK, Frederic Savary / ITER & CERN, Jim Strait / Fermilab (Chairperson), Pierre Vedrine / CEA Saclay, D. Bresson / Alstom In Review 1 to assess: the design for the consolidation of the main 13 kA interconnection splices the plans for the work organization, quality control, resources, schedules the status and risk analysis of all superconducting splices in LHC. In Review 2 to assess: the readiness for the shutdown intervention: specifications, procedures, quality control methodologies, qualifications, resources, schedule In Review 3 to perform a Quality Audit to assess: whether the status of LHC corresponds to what was expected if implementation actions correspond to the plan 18 October, 2010 First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli 4/22/2018 First LHC Splices Review programme Presentations Monday and Tuesday morning: not intended to be exhaustive ... Fact-finding by Reviewers, detailed work together: initiative taken by Reviewers Videoconference between Reviewers Thursday afternoon? Reviewers report and conclusions Friday http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=109100 18 October, 2010 First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli

First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli 4/22/2018 Specific questions for Reviewers Consolidation of main IC splices: Is the chosen solution conceptually sound? Comment on the design of the consolidated main IC splice and the proposed process. In the current preparatory stage for the consolidation shutdown, have all aspects been covered? Comment on the proposed use of resources and planned schedule: realistic to ensure the objective of 100% quality? Risk assessment of all SC splices: Have all other SC splices been studied and assessed, do they present potential risk, have corrective actions been identified? Have other risks associated to SC electrical circuits been assessed, do they present potential risk, have corrective actions been identified? 18 October, 2010 First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli

First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F. Bertinelli 4/22/2018 “Warnings” Work-in-progress: we are not ready, but now is when your input/guidance can be most valuable “repair” is never the same as “new” quantities are large (10 times ...) and of course space is limited (e.g. existing spools) some thought also to time and resources ... the study of “splices” extends to “circuits” Have a good week: I hope it is both fruitful and enjoyable 18 October, 2010 First LHC Splice Review - Introduction - F.
