Why Are We Here? Accessible Materials: Legal requirement ADA, IDEA Ethical requirement >5% of people require these materials Moral requirement It’s the right thing to do

Benetech’s Global Literacy Program 6/27/2011 Benetech’s Global Literacy Program Bookshare Making reading accessible Bookshare is the world’s largest library of accessible ebooks and lets people with visual, physical, and learning disabilities like dyslexia read in ways that work for them. DIAGRAM Center Building new paths to accessibility DIAGRAM is a research and development center that creates tools, standards and best practices to support different learning needs. Born Accessible Creating accessible books from the start Born Accessible is a partnership with publishers and content creators to help them build accessibility into books when they are first created. Image #1: Woman reading on a tablet. Image #2: Hand holding an intricate filligree ball that has been printed by a 3D printer. Image #3: Woman standing in front of a large sheet of paper on a wall. The sheet has the words "Publish and Promote" written by hand at the top and some additional handwritten text below. Bookshare – worlds largest library of accessible titles for persons with print disabilities Diagram - Started as the Digital Image and Graphic Resources for Accessible Materials Center and Partnered with US Fund for DAISY and WGBH’s National Center for Accessible Media Beyond images and graphics: Multimodality! Beyond print disabilities: other disabilities such as autism, hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities, etc. More attention on early learning More Born Accessible and Buy Accessible outreach and integration Born Accessible

Personalized Learning (and Accessibility)

The Importance of Personalized Learning 6/27/2011 The Importance of Personalized Learning Who is doing it? Often done in a silo May have to be done multiple times Universal design Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

6/27/2011 Audio Alternatives Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

Tactile Alternatives 6/27/2011 Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

Multimedia Alternatives 6/27/2011 Multimedia Alternatives Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

Learning from Others Sue-Ann starts here

Exploring Various Collections 6/27/2011 Exploring Various Collections Image repositories: Corbis, Flickr, Getty Images 3D objects: Thingiverse, Autodesk123D, Library Lyna,, 3D Warehouse, YouImagine, Smithsonian, Grabcad, Pinshape, Cubify, Libre3D 2D tactile graphics APH’s Tactile Graphics Image Library (TGIL), ZyChem’s Tactile Library, RNIB’s Load2Learn Digital books: Bookshare, HathiTrust, World Digital Library, Merlot, COOL4Ed, EDUCAUSE Other resources: Wikipedia, OpenStax, Accessible Image Sample Book Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

Thingiverse (3D collection) 6/27/2011 Thingiverse (3D collection) Pros Huge 3D collection Mainstream technology (widely adopted) Free & open resource (creative commons) User-based voting mechanism Cons Abundance of content (hard to sort through) Quality (anyone can upload anything) Search lacks accessibility metadata Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

APH’s TGIL (2D/3D collection) 6/27/2011 APH’s TGIL (2D/3D collection) Pros Thousands of 2D tactile graphics files, and some 3D files Focused on popular STEM concepts Free after registration! Professional AMPs subcontracted to produce tactile files Quality controlled by internal staff (including volunteer-contributed files) Years of experience Cons Limited target = BVI, K-12 content Very specialized file formats, so many are not familiar (primarily embossed files 2D and a few 3D files) Dedicated FT staff required to build up the collection Significant ongoing effort required to maintain content quality Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

Bookshare (digital library) 6/27/2011 Bookshare (digital library) Pros Huge digital accessible library (500K+) with 450K+ Users Scalable because of direct feed from 800+ publishers (scalable quality control) And partnerships with reading systems, schools, and accessibility community (growing ecosystem) Supports multiple file formats and options (BRF, audio, visual, etc.) Accessibility is core feature Cons Narrow target group = individuals with a print-disability Primarily K-12 content Limited file formats (e.g. no PDF, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) ebook-centric; accessible alternatives are not at the image/concept level Digital Image and Graphics Resources for Accessible Materials

What We Learned Alternative resources to support inclusion & personalized learning Lots of interest in core STEM concepts Curated content, with emphasis towards accessibility Enable search using key (accessibility) metadata Central platform to connect repositories (registry) Single platform that support multiple modalities Allows user contributions & rating mechanism (with QC) Share resources already produced by AMP Additional services connecting file producers and users (e.g., printing, customization)
