The Extraordinary Properties of Water. Water is the ONLY compound that commonly exists in all 3 phases (solid, liquid, gas) on Earth. There would be no.
Structure of water Oxygen and hydrogen of water is covalently bonded to create a stable molecule. Water is polar because the oxygen region is slightly.

Chapter 2: Chemistry of Life Section 2 Properties of Water

Bellwork 9/5 If you were absent come get a power hour slip so you can take your first exam today or tomorrow during PH! Bellwork for today complete the table on your notebook following the instructions on the board (rulers and color pencil available on the tables). You will have three minutes to complete this task.

The properties of water video Watch the following video and write three sentences of what you learned from the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eNSnj4ZfZ8

Follow the stations in the classroom You will complete the table following the stations in the classroom. You can work in the group designated by the teacher. Use your inner voice and focus in your work. You will have 20 minutes to complete your work.

Properties of Water Think about what water can do by answering these questions: 1. How do water rise from the roots of a tree to the very top? 2. How do insects walk on water? 3. Why does ice floats rather than sink? 4. Why do people become seriously ill, or die, if they go without liquid for a week or so? 5. How will life in a lake be affected if ice sank and lakes froze from the bottom up?

Review Properties of Water Create a central idea map to explained what you have learned about the properties of water.

Agenda Learning Goal: Essential Question? What properties of water make it so important? Quiz Properties of Water Lab HW: Begin Reading Chapter 2 section 3 Carbon-Based Molecules Learning Goal: I will be able to Describe the special properties of water and explain its importance. Explain the formation of hydrogen bonds

Agenda Learning Goal: Essential Question? What properties of water make it so important? Notes on Properties of Water Finish Lab HW: Properties of Water Quiz tomorrow! Learning Goal: I will be able to Describe the special properties of water and explain its importance. Explain the formation of hydrogen bonds

Agenda 9/7 Frayer notes on properties of water – finish for HW

Bellwork 9/8-9 If you were absent come see me. Take out your Yellow sheet from last class period. Complete #2 on BW-it is two boxes.

Agenda Learning Goal: Essential Question? What properties of water make it so important? Maze Testing (1st, 2nd, 4th) Review Properties of Water Notes Water Olympics LAB HW: Properties of Water Quiz Tuesday! Finish Paper Clip Lab Learning Goal: I will be able to Describe the special properties of water and explain its importance. Explain the formation of hydrogen bonds

MAZE TESTING You need a pencil. Do not do ANYTHING until I tell you too. When finished turn it over. There is NO point in trying to look at someone else’s paper! This DOES NOT help you. So keep your eyes on your own paper!

What is water? Frayer Polar Molecule NOT a Polar molecule These have regions with a slightly positive and slightly negative charge so they attract, like a magnet Molecule that shares the bonds more equally examples fats & oils. What is water? Looks like Hydrogen bond The attraction between slightly positive Hydrogen atom and a slightly negative atom. One hydrogen bond is weak , but many hydrogen bonds are strong

Hydrogen bonding Demonstration How many drops of water do you think will fit on a penny before the water breaks? Write it on the corner of your paper and lets see who’s closest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv4Jrc06yLA&feature=related&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1&safe=active

Water Properties High Specific Heat Cohesion Water sticks to each other- this creates surface tension. Water resists temperature changes which helps regulate cell temperatures. Properties of water Adhesion Solvent Water is attracted to other substances-creates capillary action Ex. transpiration-process when plants and trees remove water from the soil Water is usually present in a greater amount and its polarity helps dissolve other substances.

Properties of water High Specific Heat & Solvent Return http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH1yphfgfFI&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1&safe=active

Adhesion Causes Capillary Action Which gives water the ability to “climb” structures

Adhesion Also Causes Water to … Return Attach to a silken spider web Form spheres & hold onto plant leaves

REMEMBER you are just trying to WRITE for the ENTIRE TWO MINUTES!!! Quickwrite-Exit Slip 2 minutes REMEMBER you are just trying to WRITE for the ENTIRE TWO MINUTES!!! Explain what you learned about water today.
