Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions Factoring the expression - writing a numerical expression or algebraic expression as a product of factors. You use the Distributive Property to factor expressions. Algebra: ab + ac = a( b + c ) ab – ac = a( b – c )

Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions Example with numbers: 4 ∙ 6 + 4 ∙ 5 = 4 ( 6 + 5 ) 4 ∙ 6 - 4 ∙ 5 = 4 ( 6 - 5 )

Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions Example 1 – Factoring a Numerical Expression Factor 20 + 8 using the GCF Find the GCF of 20 and 8 20 + 8 4 (5 + 2)

Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions Example 2 – Identifying Equivalent Expressions Is 15x + 35 equivalent to 5 (3x + 7)? Explain. First factor 15x+35 by finding the GCF of 15x and 35. 15x + 35 5(3x + 7) Yes, they are equivalent because it factors to be 5(3x+7)

Lesson 3.4 ext. – Factoring Expressions Example 3 – Factoring an Algebraic Expression You receive a discount on each song you purchase for your MP3 player. The original price of each song is x dollars. You purchase 3 songs for a total of (3x – 6) dollars. Factor the expression. What can you conclude about the discount? (3x – 6) 3(x – 2) You can conclude that your discount is 2 dollars.
