The time has arrived to pick your classes for your grade 11 year of high school! Are you ready? I’ll take about 30 mins to give you some guiding tips how to do this and some important information on your selections. This year, course selection will be done on line and will begin on XXX. It is important for you to get your selections entered in as soon as possible since classes will be filled based on who chose classes first. Wait list for classes will be generated based on the date and time you selected your courses. So to avoid disappointment, don’t wait!

CHOOSING COURSES Do your RESEARCH! Make realistic choices Consult with parents/guardians, teachers and guidance counsellor Be sure to consider courses: required for graduation required for admission to Post Secondary programs and/or that will support your career plans When selecting your courses make sure you make the right choices and make realistic ones. Think of some courses you enjoy and begin to think about requirements you need for graduation and for post-secondary. Make sure when you select your courses you have all the prerequisites needed to take for the courses or you will not be able to take the class. Select wisely! Again, this year courses will be filled on a first come first served basis. If classes are full, wait lists for the courses will be generated based on the date and time you selected your courses. So remember to choose wisely and don’t wait!

CREDIT HISTORY/OSSD DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS Complete Community Service and submit Literacy Test requirement Check your credit history /requirements 16 credits by June ARE YOU ON TRACK TO GRADUATE??? BE SURE n addition to the courses, you must remember check your community hours and literacy test components. If you haven’t submitted your community hours, remember to do so. If you still need to complete your hours, try not to leave them too long, too often we have students in grade 12 who struggle to complete them in their last year. Remember to check your credit history and diploma status on the course selection website. You should have completed 16 credits by June. This year, required courses will be a math and English course. For French Immersion students required courses are math, english, french, travel and tourism, and entrepreneurship.

LEARN ABOUT COURSES Read “Student Friendly” course descriptions on the DSSS website OR on myBlueprint Talk to the teachers in specific subject areas. Speak with your Guidance Counsellor. In order for you to select the right courses it is important that you find out what the expectations and course work is all about. Make sure you read all the descriptions of the courses. You can find the student friendly version on the DSSS website. In addition, you may want to talk with your specific subject teachers, friends and your counsellor to help you make the best decision for you.

What LEVEL should I select? Current academic achievement Realistic post secondary pathway What do I need to apply to post-secondary programs? Another important thing when choosing your courses is selecting appropriate and realistic levels. If in any of your current subjects you are achieving a mark of 65% or below, then we recommend you at take applied level classes. In grade 11, applied is categorized as a C for college programming. This will ensure your greatest success. If you are achieving 65% or more in your classes, then we recommend the applied level or the academic levels. In the academic stream you can apply for college and/or university programming. In grade 11 your code will change from academic to U for university or M for mixed programming. If you are interested, you will need 6 University/Mixed courses for grade 12 with the prerequisites, so make sure you choose wisely. This is why it is important to plan ahead for post-secondary. You have four pathways when you graduate from David Suzuki. College, University, Apprenticeship or going into the workplace. If you are interested in an apprenticeship career you may want to investigate Co-op programs and/or Dual Credit Programs. Some of these programs too, may require certain courses for admissions.

Change of mind about optional courses TIMETABLE CHANGES? Impossible or difficult to change courses once you start school. Timetable is built based on student choices. A change disrupts teachers and their classes. Change of mind about optional courses WILL NOT be considered! Be certain about courses you are choosing! Remember you are responsible for your choices! Timetables are built on these choices and it is very difficult to change them later on. Optional courses you select or change of minds will not be changed. Be certain that the courses you choose are the right ones and ones you will be interested in learning about. If you are unsure, check DSSS website under student services for student friendly course descriptions.

Summer School Info STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY!! Failed a course? You may be eligible for a 2 week make up course in Summer School Want to improve your understanding of a course you passed? 4 week Summer School course Summer co-op is a great option to earn 2 credits in the summer! Summer school information – will be available earlier this year compared to previous years! BE sure to check Guidance starting in FEBRUARY. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY!! If you were unsuccessful in a compulsory course, you will have to re-due the course. Summer school is available for you to upgrade (for two weeks in you achieved a final grade of 40% or higher). Or 4 weeks if you have earned below 40% it will be a new credit, which is one month at summer school. If you are interested, pay attention to the announcements since registration begins around April-May. Registration is your responsibility, courses, locations and enrollment are limited. Another great opportunity for the summer is a enrolling in a two credit co-op opportunity. These too, have an early acceptance, so if your interested pay attention to the announcements or check regularly the MyClass site on the school’s website for notifications. If summer school is not an option, you must redo the course if it is a compulsory course. Please choose the course during course selections and make sure you are choosing the right class and grade.
