New Tech Network School McCorkle Academy New Tech Network School PK-8th Grade Outcomes that Matter: Assessment for Insight, Motivation, and Growth Sandra Thiffault, Principal Deanna Harris-Quinnan, Assistant Principal Welcome Intros Connection to Keynote/Personalization Theme Punchlines “How do we make kids care?” Assessment in service of raising the bar for quality in student’s minds The primary purpose of grading is feedback to students to improve performance Assessment practices are intimately connected to issues of motivation

McCorkle Academy NTN on Personalized Learning We believe, the NTN model in general, and PBL in particular, is a powerful platform for personalization Make student passions and interests central to their intellectual development Increases the “fit” between an individual student and their school environment Reorients our approach to data, elevating student work as among the most important sources of data we have Empowers students as designers of their own learning

“The most important assessments that take place in any school building are seen by no one. They take place inside the heads of students, all day long. Students assess what they do, say, and produce, and decide what is good enough. These internal assessments govern how much they care, how hard they work, and how much they learn...All other assessments are in service of this goal - to get inside students’ heads and raise the bar for effort and quality.” -- Berger, 2014 00-10 Reactions - Connect, Extend, Challenge or Compass Points

Old School New School VS Assessment for motivation -> unlearn carrots and sticks Tap into autonomy mastery and purpose Old School New School

Assessment measures and sorts students by ability Old School Purpose of School is to efficiently prepare students for placement in pre-determined social roles Assessment measures and sorts students by ability Intelligence is Fixed (IQ) and Learning is linear accumulation of facts This is easier said than done given the history of educational ideas. Note that there is an implicit theory of motivation here.

Autonomy: Sense of control and ability to make meaningful decisions. Mastery: Sense of getting better at something and developing skill and expertise. Purpose: Sense of connection to something meaningful and larger than yourself.
