The Hal Rogers Endowment Fund HREF Kin Canada Bursaries

Ask about kids – grandkids – nephews, nieces Ask about kids – grandkids – nephews, nieces. Who here wants a bursary because they are currently in school?

Who Are We? Over $1,000,000 in bursaries donated!! Established in 1994, we are one of the largest non-corporate providers of bursaries in Canada 1000 Students – 1000 Stories – $1000 at a time Over $1,000,000 in bursaries donated!! Each year, $1,000 bursaries are awarded to successful Canadian applicants who are pursuing post-secondary education at a recognized university, community college, technical institute and other schools for advanced education.

Our Board (pictures of all coming) Denea Parker Edwin Herrenschmidt Eli Rizk Eric Wilson Palma Champoux Allyson Palaschuk We also have dozens of HREF Ambassadors who will are able to help – this includes past HREF trustees, service directors, current and past national presidents, the current executive and many members inside our kin family who have sons or daughters who have received bursaries.

Bursary Application Process Select a chairperson for your club All resources the chairperson will need are on the Kin Canada Website Plan your selection committee By December 1st - get applications out to as many local schools as possible By February 1st - applications due to clubs Clubs review and endorse applicants By March 1st – submit to National Promotion of the HREF program works – please note the following case study:

Case Study – Promoting HREF in the community Carol Van Rooy – Public Relations for Elgin St. Thomas Kinettes Promotion Ideas: HREF Committee Formed Visited the 5 high schools in the area, talked with guidance counsellors there to encourage application submission Wait for application submissions to come in and then committee selects their best candidate for the award and submits to HQ. After being notified that they won, they reached out to the local newspapers. Give the papers everything they need. Press release, photos, etc. All articles were self-submitted, no reporter visited or came out. Free local papers If Karen is around – can we get her to say a few words and answer 2 or 3 questions. Also ask here how clubs who do promote now do the promotion activities.

HREF “Press Kit” Available For everyone who signed up and provided their contact information, we will be emailing out some ‘tools of the trade’ for public relations. Please make sure to write down your contact information clearly so we can get information to you. This needs to be done by the end of the presentation.

Applicant Selection Eligibility Selection Canadian Resident or landed immigrant Plan to register in the coming school year, at a recognized institution Has not previously received a bursary from HREF

Applicant Selection Additional factors Financial Need Active in their school/community Demonstrate commitment and compassion Kin knowledge/experience Consideration put into completing application (completeness, neatness, etc…) Future Plans

Notifying Successful applicants To the CLUB: To the APPLICANT: Phone call from a trustee to notify you directly that your applicant has been chosen Letter and information package to follow in the coming weeks Clubs who are not successful will also receive a letter to notify their applicants to try again next year if they are eligible Club notifies the applicant Clubs can be very creative in notifying their applicant Ceremony Invite to a meeting Invite to an upcoming event Be creative! A few things to remember Reality is that there are more submissions than applications – often by a factor of 3 to 1. So having a completed application for submission greatly increases your chances of having your applicant win a bursary. An organized approach to receiving submissions and scoring works well A preferred bursary is no guarantee of an awarded bursary in the following year. If the application does not score high enough on the first round, no bursary will be awarded

The Impact of $1000

District 2 – Brandon Kinsmen and Kinettes – Kennedy DeBeer

District 2 – Flin Flon Kinettes – Kiele Kittle

District 4 – Medicine Hat Kinsmen – Amy Hollingsworth

$1000 – An investment in their future, and ours Thanks to your club donations, since 1995, over 1,000 students across Canada have been given over $1,000,000 in support to follow their dreams. You have made it possible for students to overcome personal and financial barriers to reach for the stars.

$1000 – Club Investment An investment in HREF is an investment in our national bursary program to help students across the country. Individuals that win these bursaries are: Well Educated Active volunteers and community driven Familiar with our organization Leadership material These are the people we want in our clubs! Membership is important – having the right members, even more so. In life there are no guarantees – but if a student has done the leg work and knows our organization, may in some cases have a parent who is already in Kin, why wouldn’t we want these people and why wouldn’t they join? Candidates for Club Membership!

Fundraising for HREF – Team Exercise What are some fundraising ideas in past that can be used for HREF? 4 Groups, One in Each Corner Share notes.

HREF Kin Creative Learning Spirit Award (working title on the plaque) Award will go to the most creative ways that fundraising is done for HREF

Stuck for Ideas Still?!? http://www.kincanada.ca/resource-library?parent_id=184

Donation Incentives For those clubs that can donate $2500 in current Kin year (July – June), they are allowed to submit an additional bursary application in the next kin year This additional application, if it passes the first round of scoring, will be awarded a bursary. How do I increase my chances of getting a bursary awarded?

Let Students Know We’re Here to Help! Bursary guide is available to help with the submissions process – it’s valuable to give the clubs some ideas around how to form a committee, some great ideas around promoting locally and other helpful pointers.
