Listening Activity: Phrases and Cadences Music – “Jeanie with Light Brown Hair”, Stephen Foster – Mormon Tabernacle Choir Describe in detail the musical aspects of what you hear. Listen to the arrangement of “Jeanie” and identify musical phrases. As you listen, write down the words in the lyrics that indicate where there are pauses or breathing breaks. Do you agree that these are the best places for pauses to occur? Listen to the arrangement again. Next to each phrase-ending word, label the type of cadence. Write full cadence if there is the sound of the V7-I resolution. Write half cadence if there is a hesitation on the V7 chord that wants to be resolved. (Hint: the first cadence on the word hair is a full cadence)

Listening Activity: Jazz Ballad Music – “A Kiss to Build a Dream On” – Louis Armstrong Describe in detail the musical aspects of what you hear. What creative devices commonly found in love songs do you hear (metaphor, hook, symbolism, prosody)? What musical qualities of jazz do you hear? Often in the jazz world, songs of love become instrumental standards. The lyrics are many times overshadowed by the jazz improvisations and the formal structure of the music itself. Why do you think this happens with jazz standards like “A Kiss to Build a Dream On” and others?
