SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

What are STD’s? Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are infections spread from person to person through sexual contact. Also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) What forms of sexual contact can individuals spread an STD? Person must engage in direct genital contact or exchange of semen or other body fluids w/ someone infected w/ an STD. What are the two types of STD’s and how can each be treated? Bacterial; cured w/ medication Viral; cannot be cured. Early diagnosis & treatment are crucial for controlling or curing.

STDs…DANGEROUS??? WHY??? What are reasons that STDs are so dangerous for teens? Why would a teenager get tested for an STD? Why wouldn’t a teenager get tested for an STD? Most common STD’s are asymptomatic. Individuals show no symptoms or symptoms are mild & disappear after onset of infection. May not know, so may not seek treatment. Unknowingly pass on infection. Estimated that 9 million young people between 15-24 will become infected w/ an STD each year.

DANGER Will Robinson. DANGER!!! In your groups, list the differences in complications from STD’s for females and males. Consider the three sides of the health triangle. Physical, Mental & Emotional. FEMALE VS. MALE Embarrassment or fear. Lack of symptoms. Misinformation. Symptoms disappear, infected person believes they’ve been cured. Notification policies. HPV & genital herpes are not required to be reported.

WORK TO DO @ HOME : - ) Each group will be assigned a specific sexually transmitted disease. You are to go home and research as much information concerning that specific STD. Tomorrow, you will be given 20 minutes to organize yourselves to present all information that you have researched. Each group will have 5-10 minutes to present to the class their findings. Reliable resources include the CDC’s website & WebMD.

PUNCHING OUT!!! What is a sexually transmitted disease? Name four common STD’s. In the United States, approximately how many people are infected w/ an STD each year?

PREVENTING STDs About 9 million teens contract STDs annually. 750,000 each month!!! Bacterial infections can be treated w/ antibiotics A class of chemical agents that destroy disease-causing micro-organisms while leaving the patient unharmed. HPV GONORRHEA GENITAL WARTS

AVOIDING HIGH RISK BEHAVIORS Being sexually active w/ more than one person. Each additional partner increases your risk. Think about the cups. Engaging in unprotected sex. Engaging in sexual activity w/ high-risk partners. If you don’t know the person, you are relying on their word. Using alcohol or other drugs. Lower your inhibitions. May do things you wouldn’t normally do. Is Johnny Really Crazy.

HPV VACCINE WHAT IS HPV FDA approved the HPV vaccine that can prevent cervical cancer, pre-cancerous genital lesions (or sores) and genital warts caused by genital HPV infection. Protects against 4 types of HPV infections. Recommended for females 9 to 26 years old. NO VACCINES AVAILABLE FOR OTHER TYPES OF STDs. HYSTERECTOMY CHLAMYDIA

PUNCHING OUT!!! What is the only 100% effective method for preventing the spread of STDs? Identify two high- risk behaviors that can lead to contracting an STD. What is the HPV vaccine?

HIV & AIDS

PUNCH IT OUT!!! How does HIV affect the human immune system? How can you protect yourself from contracting HIV/AIDS? Why do the body’s antibodies fail to protect people from HIV? How is HIV detected? What test is used to confirm a diagnosis of HIV? HIV/AIDS home testing kits may not be trustworthy. What should you do to make sure the result are accurate?

WHAT IS HIV / AIDS Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Virus that attacks the immune system. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) Final stage of an HIV infection. Disease in which the immune system is weakened. Approximately 12 million of the people who have HIV/AIDS are between 15 to 24. Every day, about 7,000 young people become infected. WHERE DID HIV/AIDS COME FROM??? HOW HIV ATTACKS IMMUNE SYSTEM ANIMATION OF INFECTION WHEN HIV BECOMES AIDS

TESTING FOR HIV/AIDS Rapid Test EIA Test Western Blot Test HIV test that produces results in only 20 minutes. HIV RAPID TEST EIA Test Enzyme immunoassay, test that screens for the presence of HIV antibodies in the blood. Western Blot Test Test that detects HIV antibodies and confirms results of earlier EIA tests. Home Testing Kits HOME TEST KIT
