Communities That Care Survey Dedham Schools Grades 6-12 Winter 2013

History: Coordinated Health Program utilizes student data results to look at trends in order to better meet student needs

History: In June of 2007 it was decided to administer a student survey in November of 2007 for grades 6-12. The Health Advisory Group and Superintendent Doe were consulted on the survey tool selection. The Communities That Care Survey was chosen because it identified protective factors as well as risk factors The Communities That Care Survey was administered in November and December of 2013 for grades 6-12.

Terminology: Communities That Care Youth Survey (CTC)- name of survey given to Dedham students Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS)-Massachusetts’ student survey Monitoring the Future-Data from this national study was used as a comparison for the Dedham data

Terminology: ATOD-Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Protective Factors-known as “assets” that help buffer children and youth from exposure to risk Risk Factors- conditions that increase likelihood of a young person becoming involved in drug use, delinquency, school dropout and/or violence

This Report Presents Findings in Three Separate Sections: Risk and protective factors that predict ATOD use, delinquency and other problem behaviors in adolescents Prevalence and frequency of drug use Prevalence and frequency of antisocial behaviors

Four Strategies to Assess the Validity of the Surveys (Page 3): Two strategies eliminated surveys of students who exaggerated drug use/antisocial behaviors A third strategy--students who reported use of a fictitious drug A fourth strategy—students who repeatedly reported logically inconsistent patterns of drug use MS= 520, 1 removed; HS=673, 10 removed
