Editing Task

Kayla had a job at a furniture manufacturing corporation in Dallas Texas. She enjoys work there, but she thought it could be run more efficiently. She suffered many long tedious meetings before deciding to look for other options. One day she was reading the classified adds in the newspaper, and she saw her dream job. She now sells beautiful antique furniture for an auction house.

Kayla had a job at a furniture manufacturing corporation in Dallas Texas. Standard Rule: Use commas in addresses. Did students remember to write the period when making the correction?

She enjoys work there, but she thought it could be run more efficiently. She enjoyed working there, but she thought it could be run more efficiently. Standard Rule: Recognize and correct inappropriate shifts in verb tenses. The paragraph states that Kayla HAD (past tense) a job, and this sentence even uses THOUGHT (past tense). Additional Note: Actually, “enjoyed work” could have worked in this case as well. “Working” would be considered a gerund in this situation since it isderived from a verb but is acting as a noun.

She now sells beautiful antique furniture for an auction house. Did I trick you? Standard Rule: Use a comma to separate coordinate adjectives. (but not all are coordinate adjectives) When you have multiple adjectives defining one noun, this is how you can tell if they need to be separated by commas. Can you put an “and” between them? I can say that I sat in a long and tedious meeting. So I put a comma between them. It sounds awkward to say that I sell beautiful and antique furniture. Can you reverse the order? I can say that I sat in a tedious, long meeting. It sounds awkward to say that I sell antique, beautiful furniture.
