Objective You will be able to solve a linear system of equations by graphing and determine whether the system is consistent and independent, consistent and dependent, or inconsistent.

Vocabulary System of equations - when two or more equations have the same variables. Consistent - when a system has at least one solution (2 lines intersect). Inconsistent - a system that has no solution (lines do not intersect, parallel lines). Consistent and Independent - 2 or more lines intersect at exactly one point. Consistent and Dependent - 2 or more lines are the same line.

Example 1 Solve the system of equations by graphing. x – 2y = 0

Example 2 A service club is selling copies of their holiday cookbook to raise funds for a project. The printer’s set-up charge is $200, and each book costs $2 to print. The cookbooks will sell for $6 each. How many cookbooks must the members sell before they make a profit?

Example 3 1.) Graph the system of equations and describe it as consistent & independent, consistent & dependent, or inconsistent. x - y = 5 x + 2y = -4

Example 4 1.) Graph the system of equations and describe it as consistent & independent, consistent & dependent, or inconsistent. 9x - 6y = -6 6x - 4y = -4

Example 5 1.) Graph the system of equations and describe it as consistent & independent, consistent & dependent, or inconsistent. 15x - 6y = 0 5x - 2y = 10

Exit Post it For each type of system of linear equations: In the following Sketches: Name the type of solution The number of solutions

Answers Consistent & Independent Consistent & Dependent Inconsistent Intersecting Lines; 1 solution Same Line; Infinitely many Solutions Parallel Lines; No Solution

Assignment You need graph paper and a straight edge. pg.113 13-23 odd, 26-38 ev
