Cultural Impact and Modern Practices Zoroastrianism Cultural Impact and Modern Practices

Historical Contribution Historians and scholars have approached the study of Zoroastrianism from the perspective of its historical contribution to other great religions.

Historical Contribution For example… Concepts of life and after death Final judgement Redemption The idea of Satan as God’s rival (prominent in Christian religions) All of these concepts in other religions such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism, were likely influenced by Zoroastrianism around 597 BCE.

Zoroastrianism Today There are approximately 140, 000 Zoroastrians in the world today, with the majority living in India and Iran.

Zoroastrianism in India Zoroastrians living in the subcontinent of India are called Parsis. The center of Zoroastrian activity and culture in India is Mumbai (aka Bombay), India.

Zoroastrianism in India Mumbai, India

Zoroastrianism in Iran There are about 45, 000 Zoroastrians living in Iran today. Their numbers have dwindled over time due to emigration, conversion to Islam and centuries of oppression due to being misunderstood.

Zoroastrianism in Iran One way Zoroastrians are often misunderstood is that they are incorrectly labelled as “fire-worshippers”. As we know, the fire represents divine presence and is a symbol of their religion, much like the cross for Christians. The fire in the temple pictured to the left has been burning for over 70 years.

Zoroastrianism in Canada Outside of India and Iran, Ontario has the largest population of Zoroastrians in the world, with a population of about 4000 people (out of 12, 000 total in North America).

Zoroastrianism in Canada The main community gathering place is in Toronto at the Darbe Meher, a center for religious ceremonies, religious education classes and community receptions. It houses a fire alter room for special Zoroastrian services.
