Normal Conflict vs bullying Mutually competitive or opposing action or engagement Includes disagreements, arguments, or fights Intent is not to humiliate, embarrass, or demean A normal part of growing up Bullying Is one-sided Causes harm Is meant to diminish the sense of self-worth of the target Continues even when the target becomes distressed or objects to it

Examples Normal Conflict Joey and Dylan both push their way to the front of the line to lead the class to the assembly. Melissa and Emily argue over who is the new girl’s best friend. Bullying Joey organizes his friends to all push Dylan out of the way so he can be the first in line. Melissa tells the new girl she has to choose – she can be Melissa’s friend only if she doesn’t talk to Emily.
