How can we recognise and prevent developing eating disorders? Starter Match up these eating disorders to their definitions. How much do you already know? Mental heath issue Definition Bulimia Often caused by other factors as well as overeating, this is when a person is unhealthily overweight. Night-time eating disorder When a person sees themselves as overweight and so under-eats, although they may be very thin. Obesity When a person over-eats and then purges (usually by being sick) so they don’t put on weight. Anorexia Linked to insomnia, this is when a person over-eats at night. What is the link between mental health and eating disorders? Why might a person with good mental health be less likely to suffer from an eating disorder?

How can we recognise and prevent developing eating disorders? Key Words Mental heath – like physical health, a measure of how well a person is, just in their mind instead of their body Eating disorder – a type of illness which affects a person’s eating habits in an unhealthy way. Learning Outcomes: Correctly identify different eating disorders and their symptoms Describe possible ways for us to retain good mental and physical health to help prevent eating disorders developing Explain how keeping good mental health could help prevent eating disorders and how eating disorders can be treated.

Prevention Treatments http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/z29fgk7 Today we’re going to create a noticeboard about eating disorders which could be displayed in a doctor’s surgery. Firstly though, we need to become experts ourselves. The first eating disorder we’re going to look at is anorexia. Copy the mindmap into your books and complete it as you watch the clip. Symptoms Statistics Prevention Treatments Anorexia Describe the three most significant most significant events that led to Lizzie developing an eating disorder. If these had never happened, would Lizzie have developed anorexia in your opinion? Be prepared to explain your ideas to the class.

Using the information in your hand-out, create an eye-catching Eating Disorders noticeboard for Dr Smith’s surgery. Ensure you complete your challenge level task: Describe three symptoms of each disorder and one way the disorder could be treated. As above, but also describing how ways managing our physical and mental health could help to treat these disorders. Explain which mental health symptoms might be found with each disorder and how mental health symptoms should be treated too (look back in your book) in order to help prevent eating disorders.
