Sustainable business models: the DANS case Ingrid Dillo Deputy Director DANS, The Netherlands Session 6 Sustainable Business Models for Data Repositories SciDataCon16, Denver, September 2016
DANS in a nutshell Medium sized largely disciplinary data repository Relatively complex organization: broad mission, many tasks and activities, project organization as well as a provider of long-term data services Player in a continuously and rapidly changing landscape
Opportunities Data repositories as trustworthy nodes in an open science infrastructure
Challenges
DANS budget Structural funding: inelastic Project funding: incidental, high effort with uncertain outcome Tension between long-term mission of DANS as a TDR and our partly incidental funding base Staffing problems: getting enough and the right people, building up expertise within the organisation Project funding (nat/internat) Structural funding (KNAW/NWO)
DANS into the future We need to understand our cost structure in order to be able to restrain costs where possible and to optimise our strategic planning as well as decision-making.
DANS into the future Alternative income streams: Individual data deposits: processing and documentation Consultancy and training services Archiving services: Institutional agreements with universities Long-term archiving services for third parties (both public and private, both national and international)
DANS into the future Tailor-made pricing modalities: Depending on type of storage (number of copies, access time) and other requirements of the customer; Depending on the value of the data for DANS (metadata in EASY) Yearly payments – one off payments
