Исследовательский проект Муниципальное автономное общеобразовательное учреждение «Средняя школа п.Угловка» Исследовательский проект на тему «The patchwork quilt is a historically British handicraft» («Лоскутное шитье – это британское ремесло») Выполнила: Андреева Анастасия обучающаяся 9Б класса Руководитель: Федорова Юлия Владимировна учитель английского языка 2015 год

The patchwork quilting is known as an American craft now The patchwork quilting is known as an American craft now. But it came to the North American continent with its early settlers. The earliest of whom, of course, were the British. To find the answer to this question it was necessary to do this research. The aim of my project:  to find out the information about patchwork quilt Tasks: to collect the necessary material about patchwork quilt; to find out the history of patchwork quilt; to make the presentation; to present the project to the class.

Patchwork Quilt They unfolded your lives one by one They laid out your patchwork under the sun And people gathered from miles around To witness your quilt spread on the ground. And then they called out your name Oh yes they called out your name Oh and you will live forever You know that I'll be loving you Just like a patchwork quilt.

A patchwork quilt is a quilt in which the top layer consists of pieces of fabric sewn together to form a design. Originally, this was to make full use of left-over scraps of fabric, but now fabric is often bought specially for a specific design. Fabrics are now often sold in quarter meters.

History of the patchwork quilt Historically quilting seems to have come before patchwork having been brought back to England by returning Crusaders - who found their Arab adversaries wearing padded (quilted) jackets to deflect arrows in battle. They found it much lighter to wear in the heat under chain mail, and more effective than leather. In the XVI century the colorful cotton fabric with different patterns from India were appeared in England. Blanket decorated with embroidery or block printing was a trendy home decoration. In 1712 cotton was smuggled to England, and its price rose sharply. Scraps left after cut clothes made of cotton, were not thrown, but were used to create other products. The small remnants were sewn together with each other, forming a single cloth.

There are few surviving examples of pre-18th century quilts, though the Quilters’ Guild Collection contains the 1718 Silk Patchwork Coverlet, which is one of the earliest known dated patchworks. At this time quilting was thought of as a professional skill while patchwork just a ladies’ pastime. Quilted petticoats were popular for fashionable ladies daywear. Although quilting and patchwork have been practised for centuries, their popularity has varied according to changes in society. Styles have changed depending on the materials available and the social rank of the maker quilter.

William Henry Midwood is an English artist who lived and worked in London in XVIII century , he had a keen eye for accuracy and detail . He exhibited at Suffolk Street. Among his paintings we can find a picture which shows a lady with the patchwork quilt.

“The English method” English Paper Piecing, the creation of a quilt block or entire quilt using fabric wrapped around paper patterns, is a terrific skill to add to any quilter's "box of tools." Since fabric is "wrapped" around the paper cut to the exact size, precision in piecing can be achieved. The technique works well with traditional or modern fabrics, giving all quilters a useful technique for hand piecing. A wide variety of shapes may be used when using this technique; however, the hexagon shape is the most common.

English paper piecing is an old quilt technique English paper piecing is an old quilt technique. Honeycomb quilts originally started in England using a random overall design. The earliest known English paper pieced quilt was dated 1770. During the 1930’s, quilters started to produce a more controlled floral layout known as Grandmother’s Flower Garden.

Conclusion Perhaps because of their rich and interesting history, patchwork and quilting have again become popular in the 21st century, often using traditional skills combined with contemporary artistic techniques. Overall the British patchwork quilting culture is vibrant and varied. The quilters are passionate about their craft. One problem is that there are very few UK quilting Websites that is why everybody think that the patchwork quilt is an American craft.
