Mind’s On – Image Discuss On the following slide is a familiar symbol. Briefly discuss what it means for you. After your done, seriously discuss what you think it means in other parts of the world. Positive, negative?

Globalization as a World Challenge

Definition An accepted definition by Social Scientists: Globalization is the coming together of regional, national and international organizations to integrate the world into one economic system

How Does Globalization Affect Culture? It is an economic force Marketing goods and services worldwide increases the process of Diffusion – the spread of cultural ideas/symbols to another through social contact This could lead to the loss of language, traditions, values and cultural customs of the weaker country (Directed Change – the spread of cultural ideas/symbols to another through)

Positive Effects (?) Promotes economic activity and creates jobs Economic advantages promote better social conditions Global competition better for consumers (lower prices) Increases demand/awareness for democracy/rights for smaller countries

Negative Effects (?) Diffusion – Saturation of Western culture throughout the world Unfair labour practices Destruction/mismanagement of natural resources Positives can be short-term and only benefit those at the top

Documentary Analysis Simple Question: Is Globalization is Good? Make a 3 column chart: Issues/Agree/Disagree As we watch keep track of what you agree/disagree with for later discussion (Video linked to image)

Wrap Up – Video Discuss Without starting too much of a fight, try to discuss the very simple question of Is Globalization is Good? in a credible way. Be specific to examples given in the video, not whatever blah blah blah you want to go on about or read about on the Internet last night.
