Status of the forward tracker design J. Smyrski Institute of Physics UJ Report from the forward tracker meeting in Krakow, 16,17 Nov. 09 Tracking Meeting, GSI, 9 Dec. 2009

Space foreseen for tracking stations DC1, DC2 DC3, DC4 DC5, DC6 (from the PANDA Magnet TDR) width and height of the experimental hall x = ± 5000 [mm] y= (-3500, 5000) [mm] B. Lewandowski, TB-meeting, 10.09.2009 z(DC1) = (6050, 6250) [mm] z(DC2) = (7450, 7650) [mm] PANDA drawing v.0.1.15 gap in the dipole magnet including the cut-out for detector frames x = ±1550 [mm] y= ±(tg(5º)·z + 55) [mm] z = (3930, 4770) [mm] rectangular opening in the muon filter x = ±770 [mm] y = ±520 [mm] z = ?

Choice of wire inclination Particles: 0.5 GeV/c muons Dipole magnet setting: for 7.8 GeV/c beam 5 deg. inclination chosen

Configuration of double layers +5 -5 0 0 -5 +5 → Configuration better suited for fast track reconstruction with vertical straws

Active areas of the tracking stations (Conservative choice) Tracking station Number of modules w [mm] h [mm] 1 2 3 4 5 6 4x8 =32 4x12 =48 4x25 =100 4x37 =148 1298 1944 4045 5984 640 690 767 1180 1480 Total number of modules: 408 Total number of straw tubes: 336 x 32 = 13056

Required simulations to determine needed active area of DC5 and DC6 Bl = 2 Tm, p(μ) = 1.5 GeV/c DC6 DC5 DC4 DC3 DC2 DC1

Intensity distributions 0 Intensity distributions 0.75 GeV/c pions emitted isotropically from the target) 1.5 GeV/c pions

nedeed number of layers in tracking stations (3, 4 double layers ?) 6 stations x 4 double layers = 24 double layers = 48 layers (overkill?) -> check reconstruction efficiency, momentum resolution assuming detection efficiency for single layer of 98%, 95%, 90%..

reduction of width of the forward TOF-wall compensated by increase of side walls 3200

Openings for the beam pipe Tracking station beam pipe  1, 2 102 mm 3, 4 96 mm 5, 6 168 mm

Parameters of the openings

Mechanical design - DC3, DC4 – Krakow DC5, DC6 – Ferrara

Mechanical design – DC3, DC4 Frame with to double layers 2x 0º ±5º 2x 0º ±5º (Opening for beam pipe not designed yet)

Positioning of modules on support frame

Current design of straw module

Further topics Suggestion to change acronym of the tracking stations from „DC” to „FT” (Forward Tracker) Decision to continue development of new end-plugs for straws
