Why Immersion? JOEY LEAH

Rationale for Dual Language Education Knowledge learned through one language facilitates acquisition of second language Students will benefit and have cognitive advantages due to the development of bilingualism and biliteracy

Three Central Goals of ALL Dual Language Programs Bilingualism: Students will develop high levels of proficiency in English and a partner language Biliteracy: Students will develop high levels of academic achievement in English and a partner language (at or above grade level) Multicultural competence: Students will demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors and develop high self esteem

Two-Way Program History Began in the 1960s in Dade County, Florida with the influx of Cuban refugees Private bilingual schools formed to develop bilingualism for Cuban refugees English-speaking families began enrolling their children to reap benefits of bilingual program

Two-way Immersion Two-way programs integrate native speakers of the target language with native English speakers.

What does the research say? All of WRITE”s programs are based on and driven by current research in the fields of writing instruction and assessment, second language writing pedagogy,, English learners, both newcomers and long-term English learners, students with special needs, as well as leading research in professional development and teacher leadership.

Goals for the Program Seal of Biliteracy Bilingualism/Biliteracy Cultural Proficiency

State Seal of Biliteracy Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, school district or county office of education in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. Appearing on the transcript of the graduating senior, the Seal of Biliteracy is a statement of accomplishment for future employers and for college admissions.
