Growth Mindset in Stoberry Park

The Growth Mindset: “People believe…..their talents and abilities can be developed through passion, education and persistence. For them…..it’s about a commitment to learning-taking informed risks and learning from the results, surrounding yourself with people who will challenge you to grow, looking frankly at your deficiencies and seeking to remedy them.” Carol Dweck

So, what is a ‘growth mindset?’

A ‘Growth Mindset’ environment at school needs……… Praise and reward for effort and achievement Rewards for how they learn not just what they produce Mixed ability grouping, so pupils can learn from each other A partnership between parents and school so that the ‘Growth Mindset’ attitude is embedded

Changing the language of a fixed mindset: You got them all Right, fantastic! You have a real talent for this; you’re a natural! Wow! Great drawing! What an artist! Well done! You are clever to remember all those facts.

The best kind of praise…. Sincere Well-deserved Relevant Linked to process rather than out-come Accompanied by constructive criticism consistent

It was great how you tried lots of different strategies to get the answers. You must have put a lot of time and effort into this work. Good job! Growth Mindset Praise Look at how much better your second attempt was- well done! You stuck at this really well and didn’t give up. Supper effort!

Changing the way we think:

“The surest path to high self-esteem is to be successful at something one perceived would be difficult! Each time we steal a student’s struggle, we steal the opportunity for them to build self-confidence. They must learn to do difficult things to feel good about themselves.”

Mind shifting tips for a ‘Growth Mindset’ at home The way parents talk about ability and learning can have powerful effects on their children’s beliefs. Below are three ways parents can in-still a growth mind-set. And remember, developing a growth mind-set in yourself and in your children is a process that takes time. Have a growth mind-set about developing a growth mind-set! Recognise your own mind-set: Be mindful of your own thinking and of the messages you send with your words and actions. Praise the process: Praising kids for being smart suggests that innate talent is the reason for success, while focusing on the process helps them see how their effort leads to success. Model learning from failure: When parents talk positively about making mistakes, children start to think mistakes are a natural part of the learning process.
