Presentation transcript:

NL 911 Help. Anytime. Anywhere. Good afternoon, I am pleased to be here today to have this opportunity to speak to you about the 911 service in our province and more importantly in your community.

NL 911 Service Easy to remember number. 911 is a very easy number to remember!

NL 911 Service Available throughout the province. Provides 911 callers with access to emergency responders they need. The 911 service is available throughout the province and provides callers with access to emergency responders that they may need at any time day or night.

Who would you call? If you needed emergency help who would you call?

Who would you call? Who would you call if you saw this?

Who would you call? Who would you call if you saw this?

Who would you call? Who would you call if you saw this? Up until March of 2015 you would have needed to know the phone numbers for your police, fire and ambulance emergency responders to get the help you needed. Today you can get the help you need anytime and anywhere by calling 911.

What is an Emergency? Next we are going to talk about what an emergency is.

There are 2 questions you can ask yourself to help determine if the situation is an emergency. There are 2 questions you can ask yourself to help determine if the situation is an emergency and you should call 911.

Do I need help fast from the police, fire department or ambulance? The first question you should ask yourself is: Do I need help fast from the police, fire department or ambulance?

Is there a danger to anyone’s health, safety or property? The second question you can ask is; Is there a danger to anyone’s health, safety or property? If you answer yes to either or both of these questions then you need to call 911 right away! Would you call 911 if you lost your pet? – NO Would you call 911 if you had your bike stolen? – NO, but you may want to call the police directly.

What happens if you call 911? Did you ever wonder what happens if you ever call 911?

“911 do you require police fire or ambulance?” If you have an emergency and need to call 911, your call will be answered by a 911 Call Taker who will say: “911, do you require police fire or ambulance?” It is important to stay calm and tell the call taker what is happening and that you require the police, fire department or ambulance.

“What is your phone number?” The call taker is going to ask you for your phone number. Clearly state the phone number for where you are calling from, if you are not sure it is OK, just look at the phone you are using, sometimes the number is listed there. If you still don’t know that is also OK, the call taker can still help.

“What community are you in?” The next question the call taker will ask is what community or town you are in. Clearly state the name of the town you are in. This is how the call taker can identify the right emergency responders to help you. If you are not sure what town you are in then you can describe your surroundings to help them determine your location. If you are travelling then you can say where you left and where you were going.

“Hold while I transfer you to the police/fire department/ambulance?” Once the call taker knows where you are and what help you need they are going to transfer you to the right people that can help you for your emergency. It is important to stay on the line! Don’t worry, the call taker will stay on the line with you until you are speaking with the police, fire department or ambulance providers. The emergency responders will ask you for more information regarding your emergency and can help you while you wait for their response. It is important to stay calm and follow directions.

How can you help? 911 is there to help you anytime anywhere, but how can you help 911?

Never call 911 unless it’s an emergency. Never call 911 unless it’s an emergency. Remember the 2 questions you can ask yourself to help determine if you should call. 1- Do I need help fast from the police, fire department or ambulance? 2- Is there a danger to anyone’s health, safety or property?

Stay calm and answer all of the call takers questions! It’s important that you stay calm and answer all of the call takers questions.

Make sure your house number is posted clearly so that emergency helpers can find you. In order for emergency agencies to be able to find you, they need to be able to see your house number. In an emergency every second counts. Your clearly posted house number allows those who are responding to arrive at the right location, faster.

Don’t play with any phone, it can result in accidental calls to 911. Never play with any phone, it can result in accidental calls to 911.

Share your knowledge with friends and family about being able to call 911! Share the information you learned today with your friends and family so they know who to call when they need emergency help!
