The Women’s Movement Feminism: The belief that women should have economic, political and social equality with men 1950: One woman out of three worked for wages 1960: 40% of women working for wages Mens work vs womens work; inequalities in pay 1961 Kennedy establishes Presidential commission Commission concluded in 1963: Women paid far less than men Women not promoted, regardless of experience, education or ability Betty Friedan writes The Feminine Mystique

The National Organization for Women Founded in 1966 Women felt the EEOC not adequately representing women's rights Within 3 years, 175,000 women join, including Gloria Steinem 1971 Steinem founds MS magazine Then founds National Women's Political Caucus to encourage women to run for office

Title IX Part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance..."
