Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets Peak State: With a partner, discuss: Do you believe: 1. You can change how intelligent you are? OR 2. You are born with a certain amount of intelligence and can’t do much to change it?

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets What’d you come up with? How many feel you are born with your intelligence? Can change it? Today, we are going to talk about people who have a growth vs. a fixed mindset.

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets What is a mindset? Paradigm Frame of reference Beliefs Perspectives- the way you view the world Survey to look at your mindset about school How many had more *’s circled? ^’s? Which symbol represents statements for a growth mindset do you think? Fixed?

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets Can you change a mindset? How? As we discuss, think of where you want to go? Change your mindset or not; the choice is? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICILzbB1Obg Professor Dweck until 2:15 Reactions?

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets How can you increase your intelligence? Article What are some characteristics of a Growth vs. Fixed mindset (from the survey/video)?

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets Fixed Mindset Believes: Growth Mindset Believes: Success comes naturally Joyless achievement Focused on outcomes/grades Intelligence is fixed Success comes from effort and hard work Enjoy Learning Focused on growth, effort and practice Intelligence can change through learning

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets Fixed Mindset Believes: Growth Mindset Believes: Avoid challenges Lose interest when not doing well Failure defines you, gives you a “label” When fail, study less Like and thrive on challenges Do not lose interest when challenged Failure does not define you When fail, study harder

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets Fixed Mindset Believes: Growth Mindset Believes: When things get tough, give up Don’t need effort- is inborn Failure gives you a fear of trying again When things get tough, Intensify Effort makes you smart and talented Fail forward, is an opportunity

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets Mindsets can be changed Which one is better for you? Start to catch yourself if you are passing up a chance for learning, if you feel labeled after a failure, feel discouraged if something is hard. Next time something is hard, put yourself in a growth mindset: Picture your brain forming new connections as you meet the challenge and learn

Visualize Is there something in your past that labeled you (a grade, a test score, being rejected)? Focus on that thing, feel the emotions, and put yourself in a growth mindset: Know it doesn’t define you and ask: What can I learn from that experience/ How can I use it as a basis for growth? Next time you feel challenged in a class, put yourself in a growth mindset- think about learning, confronting the obstacles, your neurons wiring together and don’t give up! Is there something you’ve always wanted to do but were afraid you weren’t good at it and feared you didn’t know how to do it? Be in a Growth mindset and Make a plan to do it?

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets Being in a Growth mindset takes practice, let’s read the article they are talking about in the clip As you are reading, write down the key points (use SQ3R) we’ll do the recite and review. How can you grow your intelligence? What is the key to growing the brain? What is the truth about smart and dumb? What can you do to get smarter? Look at Survey again, has your mindset changed? If you know this, you can do anything!!!!!!!!
